Wemair Against the World

~Introduction~

One bastard child born in Scotland who would change the face of the known world forever – this was Corneilius von Weimar. Corneilius was born the son of a simple German envoy from Brandenburg, Corneilius’s mother, on the contrary, was what makes his story the beginning of an epic.

The Scottish Queen, Aelflaed Siward, in the later years of her life, was dearly attracted to this German envoy, Eberhard von Weimar. There was an affair, and the next thing Eberhard knew he was being sent back to Brandenburg with his child, the young Corneilius.

Aelflaed died shortly after the birth, and no one knew about the baby except for her, select servants, and most importantly, her son, the future king of Scotland, Malcom Dunkeld. All was quiet in Scotland - that was until Malcom inherited the crown.

Not to jump ahead, one must mention the rough life Corneilius lived in Germany. His father had violent mood swings and would often displace his anger on the young boy. These beatings and harsh words took their affect on Corneilius, he became cruel, cold, callous, but swore to never act arbitrarily like his father had. However his father, when kind and sober did inform him of his true nature as “nearly” Scottish nobility. It was then the dream was born.

Corneilius would take out his frustrations on this cruel world, and if possible he would start with the Scotland. After a brief stint as a young squire, Corneilius was given his chance. Malcom Dunkeld, now the king of Scotland decided he needed a count for the backwater province of Angus. Having remembered his half-brother, Malcom summoned the boy to his court, for he was going to give him the title “Count of Angus”. Malcom figured a family member, even a half-member, was one of his safer choices. How wrong he was.

Sounds good! It reminds me of a planned game - to play Edgar Atheling and reinstate the rightful Saxon rulers on England's throne (I'd start as Scotland first, grant Edgar a title, then reload as him :) ).

Part 1 of Chapter 1

I present for you, Part 1 of Chapter One. Please, inform if this seems will so I know wether or not to play and write for a chapter 2. Thank you.

~Chapter 1 – Brotherly Love (December 26, 1066 - May 1, 1071)~

It was a cold day, and a dark day. December 26, 1066, and Corneilius von Weimar stood atop his fort in his recently acquired province of Angus in Northern Scotland. Corneilius was a mere 17 years old, stood 5’7” and weighed just shy 160lbs, and now he was a Count. An evil smile grew across his face as he began to see his plans for the future spread out across his mind.

“Duncan! Come hither!” Corneilius called out from his bearded face requesting his lead servant.

A very, extremely, average looking man with thick eyebrows and slicked back hair appeared at his side quickly.

“My Lord, how may I assist you? I assume you are satisfied with our County?” Duncan Frame asked, hoping to win over this terribly frightening looking man.

“No, I am not satisfied you dolt! Your first order of business is making sure I am satisfied with this petty council.” Corneilius replied harshly.

“Lord…what is your will?” Duncan asked quivering.

“In this coming year you see that the nobles and burghers are given power over this land. Ignore the clergy – they are worthless, and whip those lazy peasants into shape! No begone with you!” Duncan began to leave, but Corneilius quickly remember one thing, “Send me Neil Fagg.”

“I will oblige my Lord!” Duncan responded and was gone off to see to his duty of shifting the power of Angus.
It was maybe five minutes later when Neil, a strong looking man appeared.

“Lord, you request my presence?”

“Yes, Neil, tomorrow you are to leave for Germany. You are to go with gold and bring me back some of the best northern German sword smiths you can find.” Corneilius commanded.

“Consider it done, My Lord” With that Neil Fagg was gone to prepare for his journey to the mainland.

---***---

The sword smiths arrived, and their hammers began to clang on the anvils day and night producing many a fine long sword. Corneilius, thanks to Duncan, had whipped the social structure of Angus to Corneilius’s liking.

Several days went by and it was now February 9, 1067, all was going to according Corneilius’s plans, except he still lacked good commanders and a wife. Those thoughts were definitely on his mind as he sat eating his breakfast on the first floor of his fort.

The front door of the room swung opening quickly, and standing before Corneilius was a huge man, over six foot, with dark hair and a dark beard. The man was dressed in chain mail and had a huge sword strapped to his back. Corneilius stood up immediately.

“Who are you? And how dare you interrupt my breakfast!” Corneilius was furious but secretly intrigued by this man.

The man spoke, and spoke in German, “I am Sigfried Skene! I have to come to work for you, Corneilius of Germany! Pay me and I shall assist you in your conquest of these foul lands.”

Duncan Frame came rushing in, “Lord I am sorry he blew past-“

“Silence!” Corneilius demanded. To everyone’s surprise Sigfried took a knee.

“Sir, allow me to assist, I have brought one hundred well armed knights with me from Swabia.” Sigfried asked, nearly begging.

Corneilius sat and thought hard for a moment. Could this man be trusted? Did he have skill? Corneilius wasn’t sure but it was a long way from Swabia, and one hundred German knights would certainly be helpful. This man would have to be paid, and paid well also….

“Fine, Sigfried eat with me and we shall discuss terms of your employment” Corneilius said, having reached his decision after several minutes.

Sigfried stood, a smile on his face, “Thank you, my lord, you shall not be disappointed”

“May I retire?” Duncan asked wanting to leave and leave quickly.

“Yes, Duncan, but inform Neil that he must leave for Germany to find my bride and he must leave immediately.”

“Very well, My Lord” Duncan said, bowed, and was gone.

The two men sat and discussed Corneilius’s plans, the state of the Angun army, and in the end Corneilius gave the coveted position of Marshall to Sigfried who appeared to be a warrior of some note.

---***---

Days passed, and Corneilius waited, until finally Neil returned with a beautiful Bavarian lady, Ethelinde Von Nordheim. With her there was a large dowry which Corneilius put to good use. One problem was that she was already pregnant with her dad husband’s child.

This angered Corneilius, and for his stupidity, Neil Fagg was banished from Angus forever. However, Corneilius took a liking to this Ethelinde and married her regardless.

Nothing of consequence happened for quite some time. Corneilius dedicated his time to improving upon Angus and their military. All was going well and Sigfried though older than Corneilius would have liked with a great asset and help.

One day in May an envoy of the pope appeared to speak with Corneilius. This was just what he wanted, annoyance from the pope.

“The pope requests you grant one of his bishops a place here in your court.” The bishop asked, demandingly.

“No, Duncan show this man to the docks and tell him to begone!” Corneilius barked. The man was hastily removed.

October of 1067 Ethelinde’s child was born. She was a little Bavarian girl, named Joan and despite Ethenlinde’s protests, Corneilius had the baby sent away to Bavaria to grow up a part of Ethelinde’s estranged family.

Corneilius wasted no time and impregnated Ethelinde. Their baby was born on August 17 1068. To everyone’s, and especially Corneilius’s frustrations, it was a girl. They named her Judith and she was given to the household staff to be taken care of.
Times became bad. Financially, under the steward ship of Ethelinde Angus was turning quite a pretty penny. This is exactly what Corneilius’s half brother had wanted for he was raking in more than half of Angus’s profits for himself. This infuriated Corneilius. On February 12th, 1069, Corneilius, Sigfried, Duncan, and the duke of Atholl (a duchy neighboring Angus), Maelimuire Dunkled got together for a meeting in Siegfried’s Estate.

“You want me to revolt against my brother!?” Maelimuire asked in angry disbelief.

“Yes he is unjust and takes profits he does not deserve” Corneilius countered.

“He is wise and protects us well, you petty man!” Maelimuire said challenging Corneilius. The two men were similar looking, but Maelimuire was plumper, slightly taller, and kept his hair long and face shaven.

“Those are lies. We need not protection, and I am his brother too Maelimuire! I ask you once more or you with me or against me?” Corneilius asked presenting a terrible decision.

“Hah, you petty count. You are no match for Atholl or Scotland, and are nothing more than a bastard!” Maelimuire said leaving, quickly. Corneilius sat stewing in his fury.

“We shall take your Atholl from you! You fool, and I will piss on your grave for insulting my lord!” Sigfried called out as the man left.

“Duncan, Sigfried, ready our troops. I will no longer be a pawn of my brothers we shall march next spring.” Corneilius said, feeling invigorated but deathly scared.

The following year much work was done. Swords sharpened, tactics refined. In the mist of everything, a glorious event occurred; September 4th, 1069 an heir to the crown was born. In remembrance of the knight Corneilius once worked as a squire for, he named his child “Hesso”.

Finally, an heir. Sorry it took me a few days to get around to reading this, but the start is quite good. It seems Corneilius has quite a large chip on his shoulder and Scotland will never be the same because of it. Looking forward to this coming war.
