From what I gather, half of what made the Octagon so great were the various snowclones made over the years. By itself, it's not as impressive (though still quite funny).

Look in the forum museum: there are lots of gold hidden there. Also if you want something spine chilling then look at the 9/11 thread; there are people reporting from Lower Manhattan in it as far as I remember.

The story in itself is funny; though yes all the references to it and the spinoffs just made it bigger. It even is in the urban dictionary now.
