I've been thinking about this for the last while. I am by no means an expert on east asian history, especially minority religions and cultures from 867 to -1453.

What kind of small cultures and religions should we expect to see in the east asia map expansion? How would you like them to be represented? Do you have a niche culture or religion you'd really like to see?

I really want to see what they do for the Emishi and Ainu.

I also wonder how traditional beliefs like musok and shenism will be represented.

Given that most of the game covers China's Late Tang - Southern Song period, I'm interested in seeing whether Pdox could implement the dynamic of local cults doing cannibalism and the government cracking down on them. Continuously and repeatedly, not "Oh now your province X has converted to your religion" and everything remains static afterwards.
Besides, it's not like Chinese ever "converted away" from Chinese folk religion, it'd be hilarious if CK3 China could get all provinces to "convert to Confucianism" and be done with it.

I have absolutely no knowledge on this topic, but this claim screams "government propaganda" to me. Is this well attested? Or is it something the Song dynasty just claimed was happening?

It reaches both before (Late Tang) and after (Yuan) the Song dynasty, if it was propaganda then someone managed to coordinate across five centuries to pull this off.

I was hoping for a source or a name of one of these cults to Google. I found a Wikipedia page on "Cannibalism in Asia" and it has a section on cannibalism during the Tang and Song period, but no mention of it being specifically a cult/religious practice.

you know, when the anglo-normans first started pushing into ireland, one religious justification was that we openly committed incest, which is a piece of propaganda that goes FAR back (romans were using it to justify not expanding their overextended empire further onto our shitty damp island that cant even grow wheat good)

now, this is crusader kings, but i still dont think i have to tell anyone here that irish people were not, in fact, banging their own mothers and sisters. the kernal of truth, though, is that irish people DID have a tradition of marrying in-laws, which at the time was seen as basically no different. if your brother died and you inherited his land, it was relatively commonplace to marry his widow to legitimise your rule - which was also a kindness extended upon her, since women werent allowed to hold property in their own right and this would allow her to keep all her shit. anyone who wants justification to invade your land with papal approval simply has but to point at that and say these lads are all incestuous barbarians and barely christians at all, lets do holy wars about it

i have to wonder, as i always do when i come across stuff like this, if this is something similar. i mean, it might not be, religious cannibalism is not unheard of in the grand scheme of things, but falsely accusing people of it is way more common, and a false accusation hits way harder and endures much longer when theres a kernal of technical truth behind it

For cultures, I hope make sure the SEA has a diverse amount of cultures. Burma and Northeast India should also be looked at again. For example, the Meitei should be their culture rather than being portrayed as Bengalis. They should be Sanamahist rather than following Sedism, which is a faith of the unrelated Tani culture. There should be a way to portray the Ahom migration into Assam and the emergence of Assamese culture rather than it staying Kamrupi the entire time. Burma is also portrayed as being only Burmese (Bamar) and Mon, there should be other cultures such as the Shan, Wa, Palaung and Karen. Another culture that should be added is the Kumo Xi, who were similar to the Khitans. One of their leaders, Huilibao (回離保), during the fall of the Liao, declared himself the Emperor of the Xi before he was killed.

For the Tungusic peoples, I hope that they aren't just lumped in with Tengri like EU4 but have their own separate religion. The best word for this faith might be shamanism, as the word itself came from the Tungusic peoples like the Jurchens and the Evenki.
There's also a lot of other ethnic faiths such as Bimoism for the Yi culture, Benzhuism for the Bai culture, Tai folk religion for Tai cultures such as the Thai and the Ahom. Mahayana Buddhism also should allow for Maitreya claimants, who often rebelled against the government. The most successful of these rebels claiming to be the Maitreya was Kung Ye, an one-eyed monk who rebelled against Silla and created his own kingdom.
