Of course a lot of people will move to CK3, but I think nostalgia and the fact that CK2 is now free to play won't make the average player run from the game, so I am asking the CK2 modding community what comes after CK3 ? It is like the second-coming, maybe it will be successful maybe not, time will decide that, but will modders still work on this game ? It could end up just like Rome Total War or Medieval 2 Total War, survive the ages, tho CK2 in comparison with other Paradox Games was not that much played, mostly due to its complex nature that I honestly love myself. So will modders still be intrigued to continue their projects or start new ones ? And will players still play them ? I with so, but another question comes in my mind, could Paradox enhance CK2's modability now that others things come, leave the game's fate to the modding community that keeps it alive (like other older games, Total War still being an example, mods being developed for games already 16 years old). What comes in mind would be custom gui, that would just mean modability will be enhanced by 100%. Or possibility to change trade, add new holding types etc.
I am asking you, the modding community, should CK2's modability be enhanced now that it's heir is growing of age, should CK2 remain that just respected ruler that it's loyal modders and players would still respect, or die comatose in bed, or remain as it is, a page in history of Paradox, with no changes made to it.

Paradox games generally take a while to mature and become 'better' than their predecessors so I expect CK2 to remain relevant for a while longer. On top of that I imagine the larger mods, which make extensive use of all of CK2's capabilities, will be hesitant to move until the new game can support all those mechanics, which is potentially a long way off.

That said I expect most modders to move on to CK3 given at most a few years if the game is any good. The reason some Total War games are so longevous is that each one is thematically different and earlier ones are more moddable, so if you want to play a LoTR or WWI mods you cannot get that experience in say, Three Kingdoms, you have to go back to an earlier title.

I expect modders to stick to CK II for a few years, at least. Many mods have fallen behind with CK II release cycle - with the big mods' devs struggling to update their mods to new version before even newer DLC arrives.

While some more active Dev teams may wish to move on to CK III, for others lack of new updates will be boon, as they will be able to focus on developing their mods long-term as opposed to patching their mods to newest version of CK II.

This applies especially if some modder is rather busy - e.g. s/he could potentially 'take leave' from CK II modding, and go back without need to update to account for 13542 new systems that their mods will not even use.

I will be sticking with CK2. As a team member of some mods, I appreciate being able to fix and develop new content for mods instead of just trying to keep up with dlcs/patches.

Lux Invicta is a perfect example. The mod is behind a few patches/dlcs, and SLOWLY I have been able to raise it up.

But I will be saddened if everyone leaves ck2 like they left civ5 for civ 6 when it came out :(
