If they would have kept updating and expanding Imperator Rome, it would at least have the same player base as Victory 3. What a terrible mistake to stop supporting this game.

yeah it’s a damn shame, imo it might be the best modern paradox game, with invictis I find it better than Vicky 3 and ck3, the tone especially is much more immersive than the wacky cartoon stuff

Not sure it would have reached the numbers of Victoria 3. It struggled to maintain even 1,000 players. I think it was just so poorly received initially to recover long-term, and a lot of GSG players who like the other PDS games don't like this one, for whatever reasons.

What would you guys add? I'm pretty content with I:R Invictus. I wouldn't want it to get as bloated as other pds games. Maybe a way to vassal feed with less AE, but it's pretty easy to expand fast already.

I would make Invictus baseline and expand the timeline to include up to 395 AD, adding new start dates for Caesar, Octavian, Septimius Severus, Constantine, so on. I would also add mechanics to destabilize the Empire to make it harder to play as Rome in the later era and give other Nations a chance to rebel.

Think positive: Pdx can do much with I:R look the new game outed! PDX lost 15 milions and maybay not receive future DLC...I:R was more and more lucky

Mechanically, not too much. There's some refinements I'd like to see, particularly to tribes in light of the reworks of culture and the military (for instance, perhaps modeling tribes as accepted cultures?). Trade could have used a rework - not trade goods, mind you, as I quite like those, but how they move around the map. The "civilization" value is also flawed, as it's too easy for any decent city to cap out. Similarly, I'd like to see some tinkering with the food system - a 1-pop settlement should produce less than a 50-pop settlement, though there should be significant diminishing returns.

Then there's some of the behind-the-scenes tools. There's a few issues with legions, though that's mostly on the modding tools side (for instance, we can't gate cohort recruitment with anything other than trade goods, and we can't set up a list of required trade goods as any one of them will unlock cohort recruitment). I'd like some options to control absolute pop growth, such as capping pop growth in a territory (for instance, I couldn't prevent pop growth in undead territories in my Necromancy mod). The modding tools wishlist will look different for everyone, but even a few of the items on them could have done a lot for the game's longevity and player count.

You'll note that few of these are ground-up reworks, and are instead tinkering with the formulae to bring them all into alignment. Past that, I:R Invictus really shows the direction for the game - quality mission trees, more province decisions, and so on. A consistent gripe with the game was "not enough flavor," and small content packs while these structural refinements were implemented would have done wonders for I:R.

There are a lot of good mods like bronze age, Persia or the last one that I played this Tuesday, Realm Divide that have done a great job reproducing different historical scenarios.

I am very much impressed with the work done in Realm Divide, with the set-up, graphics, music, etc... I encourage all the RP interested to try it. The owner has released an updated version compatible with beta 2.0.4:

There is actually lot of things to add.

Better characters interactions, UI even, in general.

Better internal mechanics in the sense that countries are way too centralized, which does not fit a lot of them.

Assimilation is kind of too linear and uniform, with way too few factors affecting it.

But would Paradox would do that if they picked that or would they do popular flavor missions for various regions? I am sceptical.

If there's any mod that changes and expands the trade system (beyond adding new goods), or any modding ideas around, I would be willing to dive into it.

For me, it's a shame they never tried combo patch 2.0 with proper big 15/20€ expansion with a lot of marketing effort to give it a proper last chance. But maybe the game's reputation was so bad at that moment, that people would review such expansion negatively because of the high price.

The patch was obviously great and the small Greek DLC was okay but it felt like a missed opportunity back then. I want Fall of Rome game from Paradox and I might never get it now.
