I'm looking for something academic rather than a quick spin through. I'd like something with some weight behind it (footnotes, good sources, etc...).

I'm looking at Paul Preston's work at the moment, but was wondering if there were any others people would like to suggest?

The Battle For Spain by Antony Beevor is very very good. However, it's not for people new to the topic. I can't say I read many others on the same subject, though.

While I appreciated its read, I can't say it's the best book about the subject, but as one single book on the issue in English, it's as good as you can get.
Just rememeber that since he's pulling out new books too much quickly (which was the one, the Bulge one?), it's obvious he's not doing a lot of own research.
And second, he's got a lot criticism in Spain from both "sides" for getting facts wrong. (in Spanish)

Honestly, you'll either have to learn Spanish or read a load of disparate histories on the various parties/fronts/battles that are a bit incoherent.

I enjoyed it, but it's not an academic text, and it's more suited as an introduction.
