Easy tips for sieges.

1. Build spy network and counterspy your enemy. Spy network affects siege progress.
2. Set the defensive edict in areas that are going to be sieged

What makes the AI more of a problem these days is how nerfed Army tradition is for the player (through idea groups) and the AI getting massive army tradition by comparison. That combined with free general recruitment makes wars much more of a pain these days.

Im losing battles and sieges that Im supposed to win. When I win a battle the enemy shatter retreats and comes back with the same numbers battle after battle countless retreats comes back as if nothing happened. I finally lose a battle and my stupid armies retreat two provinces away only to be followed by cheating AI and destroyed. Enemy sieges my forts faster than I siege theirs then when back cap my own forts with less garrison its still takes me longer to cap than enemy. I have everything I need to win yet somehow the game throws a wrench or something because what Im a human? too successful? Its so infuriating.
Siege seems weird right now to me. Was playing as France, had a cannoneer General with 3 siege pips and offensive siege ability and watched a Burgundian General (no siege pips and 3 cannons where I had 5, I had 24k troops they had 14k) with less troops take a fort faster than my General. Was annoying. I won the war but hot damn it was a slugfest. Their manpower also barely seemed to be effected by the war where I was bleeding troops and we were equal Mil Tech at level 8.

FYI both of those are DLC locked (1 from Mare Nostrum and 2 from Mandate of Heaven). Just saying this because sometimes assuming everyone owns every DLC can lead to confusion.

Having 24k troops vs 14k troops does not make the siege any faster. You will just bleed more troops through attrition. Cannoneer also does nothing to speed up siege ability.

If they were sieging an inland capital fort only, their modified siege roll would be -1 (Capital Fort) + 3 (Artillery Bonus) for a net of +2. If you were sieging a level 3 coastal fort capital, your modified siege roll would be -1 (Capital Fort) - 2 (Level 2 Fort) - 2 (Not Blockaded) + 3 (Siege Pips) + 1 (Artillery Bonus) for a net of -1.

It's really hard to say without more specifics, but they could have just gotten lucky as well. RNG is RNG after all.

Interesting thanks for the breakdown. It was coastal though I did have my navy. They were siegeing Dyjon. I did have that offensive idea ability, but I do apperciate the math.

I recently started a Tidore game where I started with Espionage ideas and believe me, it was the best decision I made. I could siege down forts with 30%+ efficiency because of spy networks and the 10% siege ability addition. And that was before cannons were researched

yes I know it happened to the bahammis in another war. Instead of retreating to sri lanka they just retreated to an adjacent province and I followed them and wiped them. Thats a problem tho shattered retreat just retreating to adjacent province and getting wiped. It also points to ai knowing where troops are and their path. We cant see where the army goes only the next province, unless Im missing it, but ai knows and I gotta babysit these armies to engage in combat. As I said, sometimes its adjacent sometimes a few provinces away and ai can just follow.
Don't bother trying to suggest things here. You can have sane proposals/honest discussion and some sweat from 2002 will just ignore it and be condescending. Game has flaws but is fun and the forums are a waste of time. Enjoy it and ignore this place.
