So I'm just finishing off the Swedes for good in my current GC, marching some troops into a colony they own on Santo Dominggo. Clear out the defending troops, and since there's no city walls, I automatically gain control of the province. All according to plan.

However, the supply of the province is lower than the number of troops I have there, so I decide to split the army and march some of them back on ship, leaving the rest as garrison. A day or two into their march, however, I get the "We have lost control of Les Cayes to the filthy traitors...etc."

Um, what? I had troops posted in the province, and there are no Swedes to be seen anywhere -- in fact my troops are standing there in the province and to regain control I have to march them all onto the boats and back off again, which takes several weeks.

The only thing I can think of is that I was attacked by a couple of Swedish warships a couple of days after they retook control. Is it possible for ships and only ships to conquer a province? I'm thinking that they had the ships headed for port before I took control, and when they docked, that meant they conquered it. Somehow.

Is that it, or was it something else? How did this happen? And how can I do it to my enemies?

(Still annexed them anyway. I show you! Ha!) :mad

You said it told you "lost control to the filthy traitors.." i.e. would that be "rebel scum?" Sometimes you do indeed get revolt messages in provinces but when you check the rebels have decided not to take up arms. Usually this is in really small population provinces. You should have been able to click the province to see who owned it and who was in control of it

Nope, it was definitely Sweden -- their flag started flying over the little town icon again. Perhaps they were hiding in the basement? :)

I saved just as the Assault Force was sailing up to the island, let me see if I can get it to do it again....

I think it could still be rebel scum causing it. If you control an enemy territory and rebels retake the territory, it returns to the control of the original country. Especially since the province had no fortifications, the rebels could have killed your troops and instantaneously recaptured the province without you noticing. I've never seen a "traitor" random event before.

Uh-uh -- my troops didn't die. That's what had me so confused. The ones I left behind in the province as a garrison were still standing there after control reverted to Sweden. Had to march the men onto the ships I had nearby then march them back off again to regain control.

I also have random events turned off -- I hate competing against random number generators -- so that wasn't it either.

Unfortunately, I downloaded and installed the IGC without thinking that I wouldn't be able to reload the save game and try this again, so this whole series of events is now a mystery for the ages.
