We don't actually know how the game will be played, but what strategies will you use to ensure the success of your dynasty?

I'm thinking of a couple. First there's the "Evil Baron" strategy. Pit the Aristocrats against the burgers, and the peasants against the clergy. Punish those who serve you poorly, but also those who serve too well, as they are obviously threats. When war comes, let someone else do the fighting, while grabbing all of the spoils. Do not hesitate to use the crusadings orders and the papacy in your interests. If things get too tough and your plans don't work out, then just switch sides! I know I said I was going on crusade against the mongols, but now I think I'll join with them instead! If the church turns nasty, beat up on pagans or muslims instead of fellow christians

Or of course, there's the habsburg strategy. Don't do much fighting, just make sure to marry right. The rest just comes when spouses die.

Will you build up your lands, favour the burgers for their wealth, the nobles for their power, or the church for piety? Will you grant the Knights of st John land in your domain?

Anyway, how will you achieve piety and prestige for your dynasty?

Hard to say without more game mechanics information. Everything you wrotesounds good to me.

I'm going to marry off everyone I can, and maneuveur to inherit stuff. Also, I shall crusade against weak heathens to get land and make me look good to the church. Then I shall use my influence to gain the Papacy in my hands.

Alas! The double-edged sword of marriage... While necessary to inherit stuff it will also make you vulnerable to claims on your land from others... :D

Marry very well, and then have only one son so that their are no disputes as to who gets what.

Can't fail. Of course if the game adequately models mortality rates I could be screwed.

Yep. When that one son is killed in a hunting accident when your king/queen is too old to produce a new you're really screwed :D

To avoid that can't you marry your intended male heir to a foreign powers, while keeping daughter and secondary sons married to nobles within your realm (assuming you can). That way foreign powers can't come looking for a chunk of your land. That's my plan for marrying off my kids, that way I gain claims to land without giving claims to others.

So what will you do when the Duke you married off your daughter to decides he'd rather set up his own kingdom? :D (It worked for Portugal... ;))

Details, details:p. Well now that that strategy is debunked, off to form a new one I go. I'll come up with an unstoppable strategy yet, just you wait.

What I hope is that there won't be a "The One" strategy that works in all games you play. That would seriously hamper replayability. Since you get different characters each game you should be able to draw on their strong sides, while trying to protect their weaker sides. :)

Ok a full prove variant on my earlier strategy. I have lots of children but everyone except my eldest son will/must serve God by entering either a monastary or convent as the case may be.

Then I will pass a law (enshrined in a constitution requiring the consent of all European monarchs in order to be amended - the Canadian way eh.:D ) that should my heir die without a male heir, that the next oldest of my sons will inherit the crown.

lets see Havard poke holes in that one.:D

Well... your clergical second son has taken a wow of selibacy = no further heirs... ;)

@Ledhead then you'd get a freak son like Vlad the Impaler, and trust me he's no fun at parties, what with the killing of his guests and all;):p.

@Havard (I keep getting the urge to write Harvard. I know I'm not the first, but I thought I'd let you know anyway). I never use "The One" strategy, even when playing EU2, and before that EU1:). My playing style changing from country to country, hell sometimes it changes between playing sessions:p. I'm just trying to figure out what I'll do in my first game, I need all the help I can get:).

LOL! True, that :D

That is also one of the things that make me still play EU2, two years after I got it. How many other games do you play that are more than two years old? The fact that what seems to be a good strategy for Austria is a really shitty one for other countries :)

Most assuredly at the top of my list of wishes for CK also. Nothing ruins a game like finding out a sure fire strategy for victory.

One nice thing about CK (I guess) and EU you can win two ways. One is winning by gathering the most VPs. The other is you can "win" by achieving your own goals and not worry about VPs. All of it good for the ego.:D :)

Well, maybe the best tactic will be to marry small duchies/principalities close to your kingdom, but who you can beat in a fight, and slowly absorb them.

As a Ducas I would send a couple of sons to one one my Turkish allies for military training. After that I'll have no truble beating any western army on the battlefield!

eh, more likely the Turks will support his claim on the throne and attack you!
