CHAPTER 2 – THE HOUNDS OF MIDNIGHT

View attachment 39439

PART 1 – The chase is on

2.jpg

Lady Corrigan paused, her mind swam in fog of deepening emotion. She stretched out an arm, reaching for a nearby trunk, leaning on the weathered bark for support. Somewhere nearby blood was being shed. The energy of battle coursed through her bones. The screams of men pulsated through her mind, blurring her hold on world of the living. The sounds of the dying were brief. Cut short, they stabbed, piercing at the unworldly ether, that blanketed the world of the living. The sounds made by those that lived lingered, unquenched with the hunger for more. Many mortal souls were being slain that day.

She could do nothing. She would do nothing. Her path lay elsewhere. Her search for a man of magic continued. Vital to her cause. For this mortal held the mysteries of returning to the land of Tir Na Nog. Composure began to return. Looking around the dark forest, she regained her focus, setting off towards her destination. If she wanted to return to the land of her fore-fathers, she would need to take the road ahead. It would be filled with darkness. Bring hardship she had never known. Amidst a danger until now had never faced. She would need to travel and confront her fears before she would arrive home.

1.jpg

With weariness and trepidation she headed through the lands of Cumbria in search of the warlock. Forest changes to scrubland. Scrubland turns to Forest. For miles she walked. In haste. In solitude. Until up head the first signs of life revealed itself.

PART 2 – The quest through darkness

1.jpg
She feels their presence. It is strange. Unfamiliar. Who or what could they be? Where they the Sentinels, the order that held captive the warlock she sought? These were their lands afterall. She paused, waiting for some clue to reveal itself. She could not tell. It did not matter. She had to continue onwards and find the imprisoned warlock. Taking a tentative step forward she advances through the Deepwood.

9.jpg

The branches of the wood dominate the skyline, holding at bay what little sunlight there is. Before long Lady Corrigan begins to lose her bearings. The lack of landmarks confusing the way forwards. She continues. Hope is one of her companion. Thirst and hunger the others. Before long through the stillness, the sound of a stream reaches her delicate ears. Changing course she heads towards the source. Locating it before long. She bend down and refreshes herself with along mouthful of water. Following its winding path towards the heart of the forest she encounters a small track unsed by humans or Seelie. She heads south.

6.jpg

The track leads to a small shrine. Ancient in construction, depicting heroes and gods from a bygone age. Of the three exits, Lady Corrigan decides to head east. A decision that leads her into the path of a woodland bear. It hostile demeanour is obvious for her to see. With the wild animal advancing towards her, she chooses intends no harm towards the growling creature. The spell works, rendering the large animal limp with affection for the sorceress. Behind its lumbering bulk is a fork in the road. She chooses a direction.

13.jpg

After many more long hours of trekking through the insidious woods, Lady Corrigan begins to sense the presence of men somewhere ahead on the path. It has been so long since her last encounter with anyone of sentience she continues towards where the group is located. Upon finding them, their predicament is obvious to her. They are exhausted. Perhaps these individuals where involved I the confrontation she sensed earlier. Whatever the reason for their exertions, she is relieved to discover they do not possess any hostile thoughts towards her. After exchanging rations, some water and a little chatter, they are express their relief that someone with such a powerful presence as the sorceress does not mean them any harm either. More discussion is exchanged and the Lady Corrigan invites them to join her quest towards the heart of the wood.

11.jpg

Together with her new found allies in tow, Lady Corrigan set off towards the heart of the deepwood. Soon they reach the remnants of an old abandoned shack. The group examine the vicinity of the ranshack building, and then enter through the dilapidated entrance. After wasting a number of minutes searching for anything of value, they find nothing and return to their trek.

18.jpg

After many more hours of traversing the maze of tracks and junctions, the small party encounters a small pool. Crouching down, the Sidhe sorceress glides her hand over the serene water and uses her talents to find where the warlock is to found. Or at least where the sentinel warriors guarding him are located. Before long the water shimmers, revealing a clouded image within the clear fluid. With a flick of her wrist the path to her destination becomes clear. With her small party of warriors alongside her, they set out.

22.jpg

Closer and closer the Lady Corrigan's party race towards their target. Before long the group finds themselves on the edge of a clearing where a battle is in full flow. A small group of Autumnbreed a finishing the remnants of a large Sentinel force. As the last of the black-clad warriors falls to the ground, the Autumnbreed turn to face Lady Corrigan. They question her.

What is she doing here, so far from home. Why would she leave the safety of Sidhe lands to venture so far! Revealing to them her plight, she offers them a request to join her. To a man, the warriors agree and soon together they march onwards towards the place where the warlock is likely imprisoned. To the site where a large standing Sentinel army guards the one man who can help Lady Corrigan reach the lost land of Tir Na Nog.

PART 3 – Preparing for battle

Together the small band of warriors accompanies Lady Corrigan to the edge of the forest. Darkness is setting in, the last of the sun's rays fading with the approaching night sky. They stand on the edge of the treeline, at the crest of a sizeable hill that looks directly across an even larger hill. They survey the battlefield before them. The sight removes all hope. Their quest doomed!

10.jpg

Around the base of the valley runs an impassable river, where only a few fjords bridge passage from one side to the other. Upon the top of the hill a huge encampment of Sentinel warriors stands, home to a vast array of enemy forces. Many times more than their small force. The objective of their quest – the human warlock lies beyond them. He stands imprisoned beside a monument of some sort. Called a Dolmen. Very likely it has magical properties rendering his abilities and those of any mage useless. Those same powers no doubt keep him from escaping too, bound by some unseen force to the vicinity of the stones. Scattered around key locations smaller groups of sentinel warriors have taken up guard potions to watch for any encroachment of their camp. In frequent regular intervals small groups patrol the camp perimeter. Visiting each guard post in turn.

A2.jpg

It is not all bad though, sensing through her connection to the ether of magic, Lady Corrigan identifies several locations were pools of replenishment can be found. If they can get to these pools between combat, they will be able to regain mana, lifeforce and innate skill useful in battle.

However, this encounter will be one tough nut to crack.

9.jpg

Though her force is small by comparison. They are no doubt very capable, immeasurably tough and unforgiving in a fight. Looking around her motley crew, Lady Corrigan starts to prepare a crude plan of action to take her forces to the centre of the enemy encampment.

T.jpg

The Lady Corrigan possesses a multitude of magical abilities, both passive and offensive. Being a sorceress she has the innate ability to regain mana over time. She also possesses the offensive capabilities of Dragon's Breath which can cause an enemy unit to catch fire and kill a percentage of its forces. Aura of the Sidhe is a spell that affects an area, that can turn a losing battle into a victory, by causing non-Sidhe troops to lose hit-points, while Sidhe troops in the area regain any that have previously been lost. Venomous Curse slows enemy forces down, while also delivering damage to the target killing some of them. While the Hold spell could be invaluable to paralyse the overwhelming numbers the enemy possesses., so Lady Corrigan's forces can focus on taking them out one at a time. Finally the sorceress is blessed with the passive ability called Enchanted equipment. This grants all members of the unit she controls with magical equipment, which is provides a bonus to combat.

In her army are a very small group of Seelie archers, a squad of Autumnbreed and a squad of Winterbreed. The Seelie archers are perhaps the most powerful of the lot, possessing many abilities including: Mistlord, Deadly Arrows, Magic Resistance to name a few. The Autumnbreed are light infantry possessing the abilities of: Shadows, Pathwalker and Nightsight. While the Winterbreed are heavy infantry possessing Pathwalker and Magic Resistance abilities.

A.jpg

It is clear given the abilities of these warriors that except perhaps the Winterbreed are suited to guerilla warfare. But Lady Corrigan has an idea of how best to use the Winterbreed. After assigning her troops their first objectives the small group gathers their mental strength, reciting a battle prayer to their gods. Weapons at the ready they march down the hill in their loose formations. As they take their first steps towards destiny, Lady Corrigan raises her arm and kisses the ring on her finger, wishing for the good grace of the gods to be with her this day.

The battle has begun.

PART 4 – Warfare Sidhe-style

As the mortal Sentinels require light to see their surroundings, their formations can easily be seen across the battlefield Especially if they are moving. The Sidhe units do not have this restriction being able to see in twilight as well as during daylight. Therefore, the main approach will be to take the units encountered in isolated groups. Hopefully moving from one group to another, dispatching them without being seen – and the alarm raised.

A.jpg

Lady Corrigan's force makes its way down the hill, a small patrol of Sentinel archers marches towards them. The sources of light they carry gives them away in the sea of darkness that swamps the battlefield. Here darkness is an ally to the Sidhe. Approaching through the shadows of darkness the Seelie archers and the Autumnbreed are able to camouflage themselves against the eyes of the enemy. The Seelie archers notch their powerful bows and prepare to take down their quarry.

B.jpg

However, worried that there are numbers of the target unit are more than a single volley of arrows can be fired, Lady Corrigan, casts the Hold spell upon them, freezing them on the spot. Quickly and quietly the archers dispatch these foes in a number of volley. Isolated from any reinforcements, the cries of the Sentinel guards remain unheard. Lady Corrigan's forces march on.

C.jpg

Heading to the East, a small human church stands to the right (East part of the battlefield – facing towards the warlock.) Lady Corrigan's force heard towards the church, using the small wood of trees as cover for their approach. As they near, they spot several bands of Sentinel guards positioned to either flank of the building. As the sorceress' group remain hidden, assessing the situation, another group returns from across the river from its patrol. Taken by surprise the Seelie archers unleash a volley of arrows, as their standing order is set to Fire at Will. The risk of not killing these troops immediately, is that they can run out of range of the archers and potentially outrun the Autumnbreed or Winterbreed and return to the main group of Sentinel's at the central encampment. If this happens the entire enemy force will be alert to their presence.

E.jpg

With their backs against the fjord, the Autumnbreed and Winterbreed take up position in the woods and head towards the enemy warriors on the west of the church. The Seelie archers fire a couple of volleys to draw their foes into the trap. As the Sentinel's come under fire, they head straight for the fjord to warn the superior force at the main encampment. Waiting in the woods until they are within easy reach, the sidhe warriors of Lady Corrigan trigger the ambush, engaging the enemy in hand-to-hand combat. Here they show their superiority in art of melee fighting. With their foes lying dead at their feet, the sidhe warriors advance towards the east of the church and just as easily dispatch the enemy forces there. Though there are no casualties, average health across both units is below 50%. Lady Corrigan casts the Aura of the Sidhe spell to help heal her troops.

With this part of the battlefield liberated of foes, Lady Corrigan splits her force, sending her warriors to the woods between the main encampment and a group of enemy guards to the west of the stone circle., Lady Corrigan takes her archers and heads north of their current position, to capture this stone circle, at the far end of the battlefield, on the same side of the river they currently find themselves. The Stone Circle provides the Fog of Avalon ability, reducing the range of enemy archers.

G.jpg

Once in position, the Autumnbreed and Winterbreed charge out of the woods and direct one unit of the enemy forces, while Lady Corrigan casts a Hold Spell on one group, the Seelie archers begin firing at the other.

H.jpg

With such smart use of tactics, the sidhe forces, make light work of their enemies. Before the last death cries leave the lips of the mortals, Lady Corrigan is already planning her next move.

I.jpg
To the north there is a small obelisk with a number of replenishment pools beside it. Moving along the western edge of the battlefield, they can approach from their current position and circle the main encampment, remaining unseen. Once at the location, Lady Corrigan replenishes her lost mana, regaining most of that which was used. The Autumnbreed regain their limited ability Spirit Tentacles by absorbing the energy of the orange pools. Once all units are ready, they move towards the centre of the area. Luckily by then any Sentinel patrols in the area have moved on.

There in the centre the warlock awaits. Alone but trapped, Lady Corrigan sends in the Winterbreed to capture the Dolmen victory location so that the wizard may be moved out of harms way. Lady Corrigan takes the Autumnbreed and moves to the left of the Dolmen's reach, so they are able to cast their magic spells and or use their magical abilities. However, timing is crucial and when the Winterbreed inadvertently capture the enemy position before the sorceress is in place, all hell breaks loose.

J.jpg

Immediately, the entire Sentinel camp is alerted and sends every unit at its disposal towards the Dolman. The warlock runs towards Lady Corrigan, to get out the magic nullified zone around the Dolmen. The Winterbreed and Autumnbreed take up positions between the Sidhe sorceress and the mortal warlock as he races towards her. The numbers arrayed against them are overwhelming.

K.jpg

With every passing second the Warlock get closer to his destination. However, so do the Sentinel's warriors, who are varied in their disposition. The mounted Seneschal close the distance particular fast, so Lady Corrigan casts a hold spell on one of those units, while her warriors intercept the other groups. The Autumnbreed cast Spirit Tentacles again, to give them whatever advantage they can gain.

L.jpg

As the battle is joined the warlock summons some temporary Seelie troops, who quickly charge an adjoining enemy unit. As both sides exchange blows, the mortal Sentinels are taught a lesson in slaughter. Though they don't have it all their own way. The first sidhe warriors begin to fall. At this point, both magic-users unleash hell.
