I'm looking for the files that will include the assets from the base game e.g. where the image for the water extractor is kept.

The only folder that I have found is UI/Notifications/Icons/XYZ
I'm sure you can guess a few and find 'em out... but I know that "Rocket_Landed(2).tga" and "Mystery_log.tga" each work. These are, however, for the notification icons that popup in the upper lefthand corner of the screen, not for the building icon.
Maybe try... UI/Building/Icon/XYZ
Mind you, these files are all embedded within Haemimont's proprietary file system, so there's basically no way for you to actually view the original icon as things stand.
