I heard they were supposed to invade around 1220. It's 1243, and neither the Golden Horde nor the Il-Khanate have appeared.

I mean, not that I'm not relieved, but I was just curious as to why they aren't around. Do they not come until later? Am I wrong on my dates?

EDIT: Well, look at that, Il-Khanat appeared in December. Still, later than I thought they appeared.

What? Is not 1243 'around' 1220? There are no actual set scripts in the game. Nothing happens on a specific date, everything is handled via Events that have their own MTTH (Mean Time To Happen). It's random when something happens, all you'll know is that eventually, it 'should' happen. True, Mongols will only appear after a certain date (and end by a certain date) but when during that period, it's random.

Hmmm...yeah, checking wikipedia, they actually didn't come until later in real life...

Now my only question is why they seem so completely inept. Il-Khanate takes one province to the west, and immediately loses one province to the east that they previously captured. My guess is that people have over-hyped them - I was expecting waves of demon horsemen to threaten all of Europe, and all I get is a mobile, three-province county! The Batlic pagans were more of a threat than these jokers.

If you crave for some action, you might try 1337 scenario (where the Il-Khanate is nearly unstoppable).

Oh, I'm nowhere near the east of the map, I was just thinking it would be an interesting RP change to history.

But yeah, the Il-Khanate lasted one year and fifteen days before getting clobbered by the Hammadids and Seljuks.

Let's hope the Golden Horde gives the King of Cuman a run for his money.

It doesn't matter - they'll bring the East to your backyard wherever you happen to be. :)

Well, I'm playing Deus Vult 1066 Scenario, so they don't start as a monster. In the 1066 scenario, I think they're quite underpowered - the Golden Horde just appeared in my game, and they're failing just as badly - or worse - than Il-Khanate. The problem is that they attack everyone, and everyone attacks them immediately. Not everyone, but everyone bordering them, and they get swamped, or rather they attack with their whole army in one spot, completely neglecting their rear that they just conquered.

Mongol AI is retarded and suicidal, and I've never seen them achieve much anything. Mongols is one of the things I'm expecting CK2 to fix.

I guess they must've been nerfed in Deus Vult, because old posts I'd read about them, on wikis and elsewhere, made it sound like they were a force to be reckoned with.

Golden Horde = defeated in under sixth months by a handful of pagan minors.

The Mongols' arrival is an event just like any other new nation declaring independance and forming out of an existing one. So you can miss it easily if you don't pay attention to such events and don't read which nation just appeared.
In my last game, I missed the Ilkhanate's arrival and never saw them. I spotted the Golden Horde, who lasted 6 months and got annihilated by small Muslim powers in Eastern Russia - and then these same Muslim states went on to blob over all of Russia and into Poland :D
