One of the things that's always annoyed me about the battle mechanics of Rome is that you are never able to destroy an army outright until you've killed everybody.

I've noticed that HTTT addressed this in EU3 so that after 2-3 lost battles an army is destroyed afterwards.

Can this be done for Rome? Is there an event or action that I can insert into on_battle_lost?

Or is there a way that I can trigger a greater than normal level of battle attrition? I noticed whenever I launched an amphibious attack behind enemy lines, sometimes the army would be destroyed since it was cut off from supply and retreat locations.

So maybe if a battle is lost, there's a chance for the army to be destroyed or simply lose a massive percentage of its army

This mechanic is already introduced to Rome, and I think it's similar EU3. Army can be wiped in one go if its morale breaks on the 1st day of battle. Also "Armies whose morale collapses in the first 5 days and face more than double the amount of enemies will now be eliminated".

To make battles even more bloodier you can modify the values in defines.txt.
0.2 # _MDEF_LAND_DAMAGE_MODIFIER_
0.25 #_MDEF_MORALE_COLLAPSE_THRESHOLD_

Many thanks for the tip on the defines.

Question: "Armies whose morale collapses in the first 5 days and face more than double the amount of enemies will now be eliminated."

Where is this located, or is it hard coded?

What if I wanted, say, a morale collapse within 10 days and facing the same amount of enemies to eliminate the army?

The whole 'must be 2x' is hardcoded.

You could increase the number of days before an army is allowed to retreat by adding retreat_delay = X to base_values in static modifiers. For instance, adding retreat_delay = 5 would make battles last minimum 10 days, and destroy any armies facing twice the numbers whose morale collapses within 10 days.

Be careful with altering retreat delay. It effects seiges as well.

You may find that it wrecks the siege mechanics like the "Retreat is Dishonour" tribal law.

Cheexsta pointed this out a while back and to the best of my knowledge it still hasnt been fixed in subsequent patches.

Now I have always thought the assaults continuing at zero morale because of "Retreat is Dishonour" are there to make the tribes competitive.

Ohhhh I see. With retreat delay 5, sieges almost always work, because even if your morale is at 0, you can't retreat, thus the city continues to lose morale to 0 (where it surrenders) even while your army is at 0.

Hmm. On the bright side, that would mean less sieging, more fluid front lines? I might not be opposed to that.

So that's why you keep assaulting at 0 morale.

I can't take credit for this, someone else mentioned it well before me. If this forum's search function was open to us plebs I'd be able to find who it was :(
