The Kingdom of Arabia (formerly known as the County of Salerno, and later a Principality) has grown to a point where any new border expansion will require an out right full mobilization.

I role-play each of my Kings so that they have a goal in mind to accomplish in their lifetime. The previous King (beautified, god bless him) expanded his holdings in Greece, whilst expelling the Turks.

Like his father, Nik Spartenos wants to accomplish something worthy to be remembered by. Should he consolidate Arabia's grip in Northern Italy? That would mean fighting the HRE. On another hand, Nik could better protect his vassals currently in Asia Minor by pushing and reclaiming Orthodox lands from the Seljuq Turks.

Now, the question is, where should Nik go?
(Note: Not shown are the vast Seljuq holdings that stretch from Asia Minor, all of Armenia, Syria, Mesopotamia, and Persia)

My favourite game so far, with the King of Aragon a second removed cousin (same Dynasty)

With most of the mediterranean coasts in your hands why not recreate the borders of the Roman Empire?

How does it come that your rulers are not excommunicated when Rome is part of your realm?

Rome is also part of my realm (in my game) and I'm not excommed, so I guess it's not that strange. Nice Empire by the way ! If I was playing that game, I think I would try and connect my empire via land. That means conquering Croatia, Hungary and some bits of Asia Minor.

Orthodox rulers aren't affected by the excommunication events regarding the papacy. (In fact... since i usually play Orthodox... i didn't know until recently such things even happened!)
:eek:o

(No opinion on the original subject matter other than to say you need to recover the capital of the Roman empire [Byzantion] at some point. Just like you really should help Germany avoid a millennium of fractious meddling in Italy by relieving them of the burden of ruling those rebellious gits.)

I believe recreating the borders of the Roman Empire will require me to conquer France at some point.;)

Recently I accepted the Duchy of Provence as a vassal. I would like to say they join Arabia peacefully, but good King Nik does not lie. I forced their hand in the matter. They had a province of Verona in their hands, and I wanted it. They were the lesser of two evils, the Turks and the Germans.

My rulers actually started out as Catholic, but they switched over the years and became mainly Orthodox. The Papacy is actually in Norfolk, England. It was Germany who actually attacked the Papacy way back in the beginning, and when they took Rome, they released it as a Count. The Count rebelled, and I ate it.

I definitely want to do that at a later date! Right now, the main factor that kills my treasury is the fact that I have to move every army across water. 20k+ troops from Venice to Asia Minor = 600+ gold. The rest of my army and/or my vassals hiring ships to sail kill my treasury. Otherwise, the army maintenance is completely bearable, only about -600.

I usually base such decision's on the character's traits. What are they? If he's religous for example, try and break up the Seljuqs and free your fellow christians. If he's a merchant-sort, go for the rich cities in North Italy and Ragusa. Perhaps if he's proud and energetic, have an epic war for a king-level title against one of your mighty neighbours. :) Whatever you pick good luck.

Forget Rome, this is what Carthage should have been. Enclose the Mediterranean and make it your personal swimming pool, with an unbroken border running from Iberia all the way round back to Carthage itself.
