I also find the idea of a customer kickstart coming from an established developer somewhat unusual.

But if PDS presents a concept of R2, and then wait for a fixed amount of pre-orders before they get started... maybe, that is the way to go then, if otherwise, PDS doesn't want to take the risk.

Now that I would consider. Present us with an actual concept (doesn't have to be flashy, just some nuts and bolts with enough to give us confidence), give us an estimated time of release from the point when there is a certain number of preorders, and if that number is not established, we don't get a game and the preorders are cancelled out or even transferred as credit toward another paradox purchase of choice (they can work this out with steam since steam will soon become their sole distributor), as a thank you for customer loyalty and support. I would definitely put my money on that one!
 
I'm all for kickstarter. It's not only for small companies. It's also a way to really measure interest in a potential product other than a very inaccurate forum impression. Let's do it!
