From the running problems thread:
9. Kill all Apps with Ctrl+Alt+Delete. Just leave Explorer and Systray running.

The above as far as I know only applies to win9x, win2k task bar displays a whole bunch of other backround problems, I mean programs.
Only Explorer.exe is also there, while systray is not. So my queastion is what can I safely kill in win2k. To phrase that question better, what backround applications must be running for win2k not to crash?

Antivirus and Firewalls should be disabled as well as any kind of "memory recovery" program. Basically, you look at the System Tray and you try to eliminate as many icons from there as you can :)

So most people end up having their AV, Firewall, Real Player, Getright, ICQ and Scheduling agent. Look at the config of each of these software, and try to prevent them from loading in the first place, except the Anti-virus and the Firewall, wich you will disable before launching the game only.

or you can go to Start Menu, Run, msconfig and then go to the Startup page.

Once there, there are a few things that should stay:
  • Scanregistry
  • Taskmonitor
  • PC health
  • System Tray
  • Hidserv
  • LoadPowerprofile
  • Machine debug manager
  • Scheduling Agent
  • *Statemgr
  • Scriptblocking

The rest is usually not necessary, but this is based on Win ME not Win 2000, so you could have a few other things in there you might need. However, nothing is permament, and if it doesn't work, you simply boot in Safe mode, run the program again and check the box.

Good news: I did what you said:)
Better news: It still works:D

But there is still a lot of stuff left. Do you know where I can find documentation on this issue, besides taking a class on it of course:p
Does microsoft knowlege base have some instructions on this?

The reason I can't do what you said is because I don't clearly understand what you said:D. For example my system doen't have msconfig. I can use windows manager to see what programs I actually still have running, but it doesn't let me disable them.

When you work with the registry, always create a backup first.

the 3cm* stuff has to do with your modem imho.

The rest, I'm not sure about everything, so I would advise you not to touch on any of this for now.

If you want to know what are these files, you could try first to search for them (to see where they are on the HDD) and right-click on properties. Sometimes, you'll gett a small detail that tell you what it is. Also, if it's in a specific folder, it will give you more clues (for example, if EU2.EXE was in there and the file was found in the EU2 directory, you could guess that it's related to the game).
