Currently engulfed in Crusader Kings 2, have played EU 1/2/3 and HoI 1/2. Never really considered that the top games of Paradox each cover a different era in time/history...

CK cover from from Wilhelm the Conq. (not sure if an era started with that event...) to the (roughly) the Renaissance
After this EU takes over and leads us through the Renaissance up to the start of Industrialization in Victoria.
Which then takes us all the way to the first sparks of WW2 events, covered by HoI.

But which game covers the time before? And does any cover the time after?

On a different note... I really enjoy the different focus in CK, compared to EU.
My main focus has shifted from building an empire, to build a strong line (read: good genes). Having your first born killed by hired thugs, just because his younger brother shows more promise,
really gives that feeling of the burdens leaders back then had to bear...
I didn't feel this in EU, there it was really mainly about colours (being that I wanted my colour of land to spread), and I never got the slightest attached to my ruler. He was a set of numbers only.

Letting your brother get his own land, because he's a complete idiot and because his wife hasn't managed to bear him any children, both feels kinda cruel but also kinda nice...
I imagine me (King/Duke whatever) thinking that he might as well do this one last good deed for his brother before he draws his last breath, but also being really a huge prick when one of your sons,
who's talented by all means (but to dangerous), not get anything :D

I guess I could say, that while EU is about nations (more cultural effects etc...), CK's is about the people ruling said nations.

Was fun when I had my idiot son assassinated, only to discover that he was married matrilinialy, so his sons wasn't of my dynasty, and the game would end!!!
Sure was busy buying thugs to snuff of the two brats before the old man (me) died of natural death :)
Funny part was, that after it was all done... the King of Finland (who's grandsons I had killed) had me assassinated, pay-pack!

Fun game :)

there's EU:Rome for the "before" CK2 part, and Supreme Ruler: Cold War for the "after" HOI part (though SR:CW is only published and not developed by Paradox)

if you want to support a struggling (read: almost dead) game, there's also Sengoku covering... well, the sengoku jidai (the civil war era in japan).

The new HoI game "East vs West" is coming next year, covering the cold war. It's developed by BL-Logic and heavily influenced by p'dox.

As for before, you have EU: Rome. Would like something between EU:Rome and CK II

In Rough Chronogical order

Rome: 474AVC-727AVC Febuary, 17 (280BC-27BC Febuary, 17)
Crusader Kings 2: 1066 September, 15-1453 (The orignal CK starts on Dec 26, 1066)
Europa Universalis III/w expansions: 1399 October, 14-1821
Europa Universalis IV: 1444-??
Sengoku: 1467 May, 26-1620
March of Eagles: 1805-1815
Victoria II: 1836-1936
Hearts of Iron III: 1936-1948
East Vs. West: 1946-1991

Also, do note that there are fundamental differences in gameplay due to the different eras involved.

Rome has a mixture of systems from CK and EU (You have characters ala CK style, but you play as a state, so you don't have to worry about the lack of succession). CK is character-driven, and you will be worrying about people management half the time (if not more). EU's style is state again, but its trade system is not as robust as that found in Victoria, as is expected from the explosion of good types arising from the Industrial Revolution. Also, if I'm not mistaken, Hearts of Iron focuses more heavily on combat than EU or Victoria. Be prepared to dive into war for the entire duration of your game in HOI.
