Afaik Johan wrote that EUIV start sold more compared to CK2 start aswell somehwere here at the forum.
EU has a much longer and bigger gamerbase and well, the stats Johan posted speak for themself.

Will be interesting to see how much HoI4 will top that though. :)

I don't think HoI4 will top EU IV. Not sure why but it's a feeling I have :D
Who knows by now.
Afaik HoI3 was best selling game of PDS before CK2. So WW2 seems to attract the most.

Eu4 customers are far more likely to play every day, and a much much larger percentage of them play every month.

How does that compare to ck2 at the same amount of time after release? I'd also be interested to know which lasts long in the long run.

Probably because EU4 plays much better than CKII on an essential level. Far less infuriating bugs and anomalies.

This is completely true. EU4 plays like a dream compared to CK2, and yet i prefer CK2. Maybe it is the roleplaying aspect, i'm not sure. Also, even tho EU4 has more players, CK2 still ranks 50'th most played game on Steam. Considering Steam has 3700+ games, that is quite good.
