OK, I wasn't too happy with either TRP or WIF mods as they took unreasonably long times to fight battles so that it became more like WWI trench-warfare than blitzkrieg. Aircraft etc. all had to be used differently with 8-fighter squadrons etc.

By contrast, DAIM/SMEP games were marvellous with real improvements in AI etc. Trouble is that DAIM doesn't allow the enemy AI to launch its nukes so I would like a game which allows the AI to launch nukes against me. I have heard of the Compendium and Confederate Armageddon mods but want to be sure they don't have the TRP/WIF characteristics.

I also tried CORE 0.4 recently in the hopes that the AI they boasted of would be great but that failed when I realised that in 1943/1944 my country's land-units had mostly not been upgraded from 1939 INFs by then, implying some bug or ridiculous mod-characteristic since I had already researched all relevant 1944 INF-related techs.

Anyway, any suggestions re a better mod would be appreciated! Thanks.

TRP and WiF are deep into realism actually, but i see what you mean, you would like something better than vanilla but not too crazy. Like lord goof said Mod 34 is nice, the AI use nukes and launch nice invasions from time to time. Kaissereich AI is the same as in vannila afaik.

I remember a DAIM AAR where the AI used nukes.

Well, shame re Kaiserreich having just the same AI. I'll try soon to buy the newest mod34 version as it sounds less wacky than TRP/WIF re combat just unusual tech(is the newest version compatible with armag 1.3 beta 2?). When I installed the older, downloadable version yesterday though it seemed to not work(at least the spy system was permanently greyed out - I assumed that that was because it wasn't compatible with armageddon 1.3 beta 2 just armageddon 1.2, judging from some vague installation-component instructions.

I do feel a bit inadequate for not mastering TRP/WIF as yet, but it's so easy to get bogged down into trench-style warfare with those. I'll try them at a later stage. Catch is that the old WIF download link doesn't seem to be working, though an HOi3-type WIF seems in the works, instead.

I'm a bit late here but I'd love to give some love to WiF. And you're correct, the prolonged battles take away from the game and ruin, what otherwise is a nearly perfect game. My issue isn't with the length of the battle, but rather, your forces emerge from these battle with ridiculously high levels of experience. I also do wish Fernando had modified the tech tree somewhat. But, in my experiences with other mods, you'll find no better or challenging AI than WiF's; the others don't even come close.

I'm using Compendium now just to see what it offers and I do love the naval treaty aspect, prohibited use of armoured divisions until the invasion of Poland, restrictions on what the US can build prior to war, and the expanded tech tree; but sadly, the AI is really really weak.

Based on this thread, however, I'm going to have to try out Mod '34 really soon :D

Oh, by the way, the link for the latest WiF (Titanium) is still working:

Be sure to follow the installation instructions though.

MOD34 is pretty good.
It adds a lot of depth to the game with the expanded timeframe, techtree and a whole lot of events.

It may look a bit overwhelming at first because of the huge techtree (which looks confusing), the new research system with bonus/malus to research speed, the huge amount of events (that slow the game down a bit), and other changes like build times.

What i like the most out of it, is that it makes you feel as if the army/navy/air force of country X is very different of that of country Y. With so many technologies available, divisions, ships and wings become "customizable", and that is very good.

Out of all the mods i've played, it's the one i rate the highest. Followed by Kaissereich and Modern Day Scenario.

In Core there's no problem upgrading 1939 Infantry unit types to the next level. This level is 1943 but not 1944. Depending on the country you play and it's slider setting this upgrade may take some time, especially if you are at full central planning and full drafted army

I had already researched the 1941, and 1943 land-unit INF techs long before, yet the upgrades still hadn't happened by mid 1944. Almost all of my INF were still 1939-based, which was ridiculous. I'm sure there was some bug.

Well, the mod34 AI seems quite good given the SCW. The catches are that the tech-tree is so hopelessly jumbled that I am only really understanding it after 3years into my 1st game.

Also, I am unable to ally as Germany with either Greece or Turkey like in vanilla and DAIM. Yet I'm easily able to ally with Nationalist Spain after the SCW, and Portugal/Bulgaria before that. This makes no sense at all. Turkey shouldn't be given "market liberal" as a choice as Kemal Ataturk was a dictator at the time and Turkey only became a democracy in 1938, and not even then as it was constantly dominated by the military from then on. I realise that mod34 creators want to simulate some historical happenings such as the fact that Turkey was neutral during WW2 and that Greece was ultimately invaded by the Axis. But such arbitrary alliances are meaningless.

What I would prefer is if countries only allied with the Axis or Allies if certain conditions were met:-

1) that country gets attacked by axis or allies, as in vanilla etc.

2) Portugal only allies with Germany if Germany invades Spain(or allies with Spain) and gets Gibraltar. The portuguese dictator liked Hitler but didn't want to join him as that would mean losing Portuguese colonies abroad, so he would have needed an incentive. Franco would never really joined with Hitler as he was paid a hefty sum by the British to stay out of the war, so Nat Spain should only ally with the Axis if a) Germany funded Nat Spain during the SCW, and b) Germany provided a hefty bribe in exchange or c) if Germany occupied London.

Similiarly, Turkey, despite being anti-Communist should only join the Axis if the Germans take Moscow or Suez or something like that.

Similiarly, Sweden in WW2 increasingly allied itself with the Allies to some extent as the Germans started losing the war. So, perhaps some sort of aid from sweden would work. etc. etc.

Other than the pretty meaningless tech-tree, I find the mod34's standard of english so bad as to make me almost wince. I have high hopes re the AI , though, and it doesn't seem to have changed the combat-system too much, thank god.

I played Mod34 for the first time this week and found it pretty good!. The tech tree does not really faze me. It's pretty simple when you play a bit, and when you think about it it's a lot more representative of real life. You can't research full tank techs if you haven't researched certain industrial techs that are needed to produce the said tanks. Mod34 addresses this nicely. I really like the added events as well, events always make the game more interesting. The only problem is that they are poorly translated (into english).

I also very much enjoyed the cold war mod, but support for that mod seems dead lately. A shame since it put the emphasis on a completely different timeline with the tech tree to go with it. Felt like a new game altogether.

Well, there is a new version soon to be released. You could try that when it comes out.
