'm a complete novice in mod building. I started studying the official tutorial and tried changing unit values in the official editor. Please tell me which tools I should use to change the appearance of units, using only in-game assets

To edit unit appearance
  1. Open Culture_Feudal_Modularity.rpk
  2. In the Category drop-down at the top choose Feudal Culture Units
  3. Find the unit component in the left pane, right click, Create Mod
  4. Add/remove/edit stuff from the Mesh, Mesh Name, and PFX lists to modify the look. Easiest to copy and paste from other units.
Normal culture outfits are all race, if you want elf only you need to make another component and use the tag filter, probably..
  1. Find and select the component in the left pane.
  2. In the right pane under FILTERS click the orange square to the right of Tag Filter.
  3. Right click the All of the following, Choose Add -> Contains { Tag },
  4. Click on the word { None } on the new line then search for "Elf" in the box that pops up. Click on Elf under Modularity/Skin.
  5. Click on the word Contains on the new line to make it Does not contain Elf
  6. Select the component again in the left pane and copy and paste it into an empty row using ctrl+c/ctrl+v
  7. Open the tag filter in the duplicate component and change the last line back to Contains Elf
  8. Modify the duplicated component
