Right, now he's gone, time to take over Stellaris with the Irish...

"Cheers to the Signalman," Chac chimed into the chorus of well wishes for @Macavity116 .

The ancient one held his glass of mezcal high and then took a long draw. He sighed.

"Sorry to see you go. May you stay as safe as possible on your deployment. Glad you finished the latest AAR. I have started reading it but like so many, I am far behind."

The ancient one put his glass down on the bar's counter, perhaps a bit too hard. The sound rang through the bar momentarily. He noticed out of the corner of one of his eyes that European football games were playing out on the magic screens.

"You will be missed, Signalman. Thank you for all your contributions here and your service. I hope I will have read a lot more of your material by the time of your return," Chac added.

"And while we are toasting and wishing folks well on new assignments and deployments. I had heard that @Wraith11B also has a new assignment. Hoping he stays safe with his new job too."

"I do, actually, and have to edit the old soldier-student-deputy to soldier-student-investigator with my shiny gold badge rather than silver..." he trails off. "I know you can't say, @Macavity116, but they might have Internet wherever you are. I've heard good things about the improvements in connectivity out there over how it was for me fifteen (gawd bless) years ago in the sandbox. Heck, I was a community ambassador for all of a month or so back then, but then they just... stopped." A shrug. "Anyways, stay safe, make sure you make it home."

I look forward to returning with a story to tell in 2026.
“And we look forward to that return and story,” opines Bullfilter, with a brief nod of acknowledgement to The Signalman as a neat single malt scotch is brandished. “Your absence will leave a metacavity in the forum in the meantime. Salut!” It is drained and the cut glass snifter plonked back on the baar with a clink of glass on wood. <Exeunt stage right>

Nikolai raises his glass.
"TOAST! Toast for one of the most amazing writAARs out there!"
He smiles sadly.
"It will be a long year without you, and we will miss you greatly. However, a thank you for serving is in order, I think. I have friends who served in Afghanistan. It takes its toll. Not everyone comes back whole, or at all. We owe you gratitude."
Nikolai raises his now empty glass again.
"So a toast! And may you come back with inspiration and another grand tale, sound in health and mind!"

The ancient one was roused from his slumbers in the library area of the bAAR. He had a volume of HOI AARs open in his lap.

"The chair is feeling extra comfy lately," he muttered to himself, knowing that he had kept his vow and back-read the latest from @stnylan . "My April project is complete. Now, I must catch up with others. The queue is so long. The thought is daunting."

He shook his head. What @TheButterflyComposer had written is what had awakened him. He could see the writing on the magic screens even among the cavalcade of other images: baseball, basketball, hockey and news of other sports too.

"Personally, I think this is a great development for AARland. For those who haven't checked it out, having an interactive role-playing AAR is quite interesting. @Eurasia should be commended for what started as more of a typical AAR about the U.S. civil war," he added.

"Oh, and by the way, please help out @Nikolai and post your ACA ballot this week," he continued. "Just posted mine today."

Then he went to the main bar area to replenish his glass of mezcal as he pondered his next reading project.

Euraisa looked up from the corner of the bAAR. "First let us see how many of them live through the AAR!"

As covered in the AAR itself, none of the named characters so far should survive, given the chance of death OTL, and especially given the tactics of the commander in game!

The soldier-investigator-student spills his way into the bAAR, his arms failing to maintain control over the pile of books which had been clutched to his chest as he stumbled in. Picking himself up and dusting himself off, he smiles. "Not to sound kinda like Gru from Despicable Me or anything, but I have just finished something... when you hear about it, you're all going to be very proud!"

The man holds up a diploma frame. "You'll note it is currently empty," he says, sheepishly. "Buuuuut, I have just arrived from finishing my last piece of schoolwork for the Masters of Science degree which will go inside! To celebrate, a round for the house on me!"

CONGRATULATIONS!

That is indeed worthy of celebration!

A little early to be toasting in the current time zone that the bAAR occupies, but the ancient one realized he was already a bit late to the celebration, and besides it was prime toasting time in the UK where @Wraith11B likely was residing.

"Education is the key, to the future, and so much more," Chac agreed as he lifted his glass of mezcal. He took a large gulp and smiled. "Wraith's future is bright: a newlywed with a new degree. The future is just opening up for him now."

Cappuccino or bourbon... All's well for a celebration at any time!

"Cybercrime and Digital Investigation! Which seems odd to earn the MS title, honestly, given that the other CJ fields get MAs I think..."

"An achievement definitely worthy of celebration." The Tunneller agrees, raising his refilled glass in a toast. "After you take a well earned break what are your plans for all the time freed up now your academic labours are at an end. More time on the mean cyber streets catching criminals, further study, or dare we hope a return to AAR writing?"
