I feel like when I last played this game some years back, the dig sites were not costing me nearly so many scientists. Has something changed here?

It's getting to the point that I just buy a cheap one and throw them in because the ones I prepare and give the appropriate skills will just die anyway on some level 4 site when they are 6+ scholars. The investment seems pointless if it can't keep them alive—a new one is dirt cheap.

That sounds like god awful luck. Sorry to hear that. My last game I completed 10 dig sites and only one scientist got maimed. That was just one negative event out of 10 dig sites.

The chance is better (well, supposed to be) but it seems like it can still happen regardless. Which leads me to think that, since I don't actually need a high level scientist for it—why bother? It just seems like a waste training them up tbh.

I've personally on experiened bad things happening to the scientist in digs and rifts as a result of narrative choices I've made?
The ones I'm getting aren't from choices, it's just like someone "goes missing", or something of that sort. It happens in between choices while it's just rolling for progress.

Are you playing hive or mi? Because I think 'goes missing' is one of the 'old age' flavour texts for them. Nor sure though.

Or is the text occuring inside the dig itself?

No just a regular empire, and yeah it's the dig itself doing it. I think that's just one of the text options that comes up when they fail a roll badly enough to die.

It just sounds like RNGesus is hating on you right now. I've never thought of dig sites as being especially dangerous.
