Why? What is the point of having a HoI2 simulating 1945 to 1990 precisely when there is no war? Why does everybody (or is it just me feelings everybody wants) want those mods? Nuclear weapons would make war pointless and the long, long time period would just result in every nation having 100+ divisions reday.

Don't get me wrong - I don't hate cold wra mods or so, I just wonder why so many people want to have them.

I would prefer an ahistorical cold war mod in a timeline where WWII ended without the USA finishing the A-Bomb and with some other changes (e.g. Japan divided between USA and USSR too). There could be a post-WWII/pre-WWIII period where East and West try to expand their spheres. In case the player (or the AI) makes risky choices, he might gain extra power, accidentily drive nations into the enemies or start the war early. But everything would be ahistorical and much, much shorter. That would be a mod I would like!

I think they aim for a historical cold war setup and then play WWIII.
I do not think anyone would like to play "military buildup for 30 years"

I know of at least 5 Cold War related mods and I don't think any of them strive to be 100% historical (not even HoI2 or AoD do that). Some might set up historically but all give chances for a global war to outbreak (usually over the Berlin blockade or the Korean War or Cuban Missile Crisis).

You're right in that it would be stupid to play a war game with peace for the whole period. Fortunately, none of the Cold War mods are like that.

I think the idea is that you would have events that could potentially lead you to a hot war. Just for example, if you play as the US during the Cuban Missile Crisis you could pick from different solutions on how to handle the Soviets that would add alternate history=ic options.

For example my mod starts from historical 1990 setup, but just about every event has a chance for ahistorical possibilities. And for the USA and USSR, just about every major event has a chance of atarting a WW3. Nukes are limited so that only if a war goes badly, you can use them.

If the game speed zipped along at a good rate, and there was the potential for proxy wars and wars like Vietnam and Korea without the entire world getting involved, I'd enjoy that.
