I am playing Spain and am colonizing South America. There is this square which makes gold that I want to colonize. I have built a trader there already. I can send more traders but not settlers. I can colonize most of the squares around it. There is a square next to it that I cannot colonize either but I have a trader there.

I don't understand it. There are no natives on there and I have the settlers and gold necessary. I have already been able to colonize another gold square close by.

Any suggestions?

To colonize, the province has to be on a shore or adjacent to another colony/city. The only exception to this is Siberia where You can also put up colonies adjacent to tradeposts. So You will have to make a chain of colonies leading to that province first.

Thanks for the input. I was confused because I was able to build a city deeper into the interior that the one I was describing. But I was able to capture an Incan city next to it so that is why I was able to colonize it. Ah hah!

I didn't see that note that you can only build colonies next to adjacent cities in the manual.
