In my first game of CORE, I took the US.
Typical game; no real special events. Poland, France fell on schedule. Germany attacked USSR June 22 1941.
In mid-August 1941, I DoW'ed Germany.
I tried to join the Allies, but my chance to join Alliance with UK is 0.
I have relations of +200 with Britain, and have no weird changes to the US political scene (Roosevelt is President, I haven't moved the sliders - except for interventionism - at all, no f12'ing at all).

I just wanted to try out CORE, so I haven't messed with anything. Why can't I join the Allies?

Note: I can't do anything in the Atlantic/Europe - everything is too far away to invade. I've coup'ed Portugal to try and get access - I can then base troops out of Lisbon and invade Sardinia or other Italian place from there.

The trick normally is getting the 'Isolationalism' level down asap (diplomatics screen). That's blocking the US from joining the Allies in the beginning. That way you should be able to join the Allies around 1938 (though I have been able to join in 1937 a couple of times). You can change one setting one notch every year in the diplomatics screen, so you have to be punctual at first. Check the tooltip on the 'Isolationalism' slider whether joining alliances is allowed or not.
About everything being too far away: well, that depends on what ships you are sending along with your transports. I've been able to invade Sardinia (in one go) or Norway (using Iceland as halfway point), provided I don't send destroyers along (they have a limited range). It's risky though, it leaves the transports rather vulnerable.

That isn't the issue - I've been faithfully nudging up my interventionism since Jan 1 1936. Coupled with a war rally and the Nanking Massacre, my interventionism is as high as it can go - I did DOW Germany on my own, remember.

I can ask Britain if I can join the Allies just fine - that's not the issue. The issue is that when I do, my chance of success is 0%. In vanilla HOI2, it would be 100% under similar circumstances. What's the difference with CORE?

There shouldn't be any difference AFAIK. Now, it could be an AI issue, in that the UK AI has not switched to a USA at war one, but even so, it should still give you some sort of chance. Now, the only excpetion I can think of here is that if you as the USA are already in an alliance, say with PHI or Liberia, or NatChi. That can alter things siginificantly.

Well, I've had no problems at all playing several games as US in CORE 0.1 and CORE 0.11. I do have problems inviting Italy into the Axis with relations up to 200%, but that might be a scripted issue. But for the US everything works fine, by the looks of it.
So the only thing I can think of is having your own little alliance next to the Allies, as JRaup mentioned. If not please let me know - then we the best road would be to analyse your savegame, I guess.
