I'm playing HFM as Madagascar. I'm sphered by France and the year is 1874. I got a few technologies from events and decisions, but once I completed my westernization and clicked the button "Westernize", my technology tab started showing me with 1836 start game level of technology (in other words, I only have the first level of every tech).
The year being 1874, it is impossible to keep playing and competing with other countries with a 40 years gap in tech. I simply can't start researching everything from the bottom this late and hope to catch up.
I know Madagascar is supposed to be severely handicapped compared to any Great Power, but I hoped that at the very least I could retain the techs I already had prior to westernization. I always read that nations that westernize automatically acquire a number of technologies based on what the Great Powers have researched, but I got nothing at all. It's impossible that any Great Power doesn't have any technology researched in 1874.
Anyone, please shed some light to me. Why am I getting no technology from westernizing, and how can I address this? Could I make a an event that gives free techs to compensate for this handicap somewhat?
