why not think outside the box and make a game about the warring states period in Chinese antiquity?

Clearly because PDS collectively don't share an interest in the period. Johan has said many times that he isn't interested in making a a game he isn't interested in making.

Maybe Rome isn't a hit because Rome already conquered almost the entirety of the known and usable world, and the prospect of commanding such an empire isn't that appealing seeing as the thing you will do is recreating the borders, slightly expanding, fight rebel wars, and/or fail miserably? Personally I think it's a lot more to other series that Paradox works on, since no one, with few exceptions, managed to reach the height that Rome did. That creates an opportunity for the player right from the bat.

I don't know, is it exciting to hunt down native scum in the uncolonized and backwards Germanic woods and strike Carthage and Egypt down with your imperial hammer? It's already been done basically.

I think my point was that other titles offers a lot more than Rome will since it's very limited and doesn't really offer an exciting breaking point in history.

more interested in playing hellenic states or various other states during this period personally.

Playing as Hellenic states during that time? Would be pointless. Almost certainly would you be conquered by the Romans.

history wasn't set, the romans had a succesful military system, and got "lucky" several times during their history, i'd say there's as much chance that someone reunited the diadochi and eclipse rome, or carthage smashes rome changing all history, etc etc, too many examples to state, but also by hellenistic states I was refering to macedonia, epirus, selekia, ptolemai, baktria, maybe even massila and emporion, always found it neat colonizing parts of gaul.

True this. When history would be replayed I dont think the Republic would survive untill the birth of Jesus most of the times. Rome was so lucky its scary: Etruscans, 'North Italy's' Celts, Carthage, Iberian Celts, Cimbri's band of lovely raiders, and during Rome's 1st civil war the Pontic king. The list goes on and on. Ofc their discipline and determination helped a lot. The point being a game with Rome could be more interesting as it seems at first.

I don't know where you all are coming from but i get the feeling it's less about Swedes not liking Roman times. But more about USA 'over-hyping' roman times, every since their founding fathers came to the bright idea to base pretty much their whole government on the Roman republic.
I have no idea what get taught over in the US but somehow i get the vibe it's more focused on Rome.

Can only talk about my own education but we didn't have much about the roman times. We only had about a week where we talked about them. Had more focus before and a lot more after Roman dominant times. But well a lot more relevant to Germany happens after Rome's downfall. Come to think about it Byzantine was only a side note like and well that existed for a short period for some reason.

I never get this obsession with Rome all the 'we need a new Rome game' shouters have. I much rather see more games in the Renaissance and modern times. But to everyone his own.

We don't really learn anything about Rome. Basically it consists of Caesar by Shakespeare. So basically nothing. Maybe those of us who take the time to research it ourselves just find it interesting.

fair enough. As with every topic assuming things is a dangerous thing. This is why discussing these things helps a lot =).

I guess it comes down to everyone is different and find's other things interesting. Which is a good thing. I find it weird, so many are so vocal about the Roman area.

then why was he one of the first to sign rome 2 petition.

*sigh* I like to think most people on these forums are smarter than that...

what are you trying to say? an insult or? sorry it's early don't really get your post haha.
edit: ok i see I replied to a post not directed at me or my precious rome 2, my mistake.

on another note, i'm vocal about rome because it's a great time period, just how I was one of the people who started the ck2 movement if you check my old old posts, i shed a tear on the day it was announced, and I also plan on being a vocal proponent for the sānguó period of china once I rome 2 is achieved, however I am less optimistic because it will be hard for westerners to portray the period accurately I believe, also the fact that paradox isn't interested in the period is a huge hinderence.

Why do Swedes hate Romans... Why do Romans exhibit zero class whatsoever? But to more accurately answer what I think you're saying, it would be the lack of worldly cartographic knowledge of the time, for one major reason. Notice how all Paradox games are on a world map? Well, a Roman era game would definitely lack this, and lack depth with it. Just being able to conquer Europe isn't what Paradox is about....

CK2 is not on a world map, it covers the middle east, North Africa, Europe and small part of Asia and that's pretty much it. The Rome game would likely also cover the same area as CK2 is covering.

Really? In Italy we have 1 history year in high school dedicated completely to Rome and another year dedicated completely to Greece. The next year is middle ages, the next one is 1453-congress of Vienna, the last one is 1815-WWII. It's 4 hours of history owe week IIRC for Rome and Greece, and 2 hours for the rest.

In Sweden we practically don't even mention the Romans or the Greeks either. It's vikings and the Norse mythology we had to learn about. Plus of course learning about famous Swedish kings like Gustav Vasa and others.

atleast you guys dont have new zealand history, they just teach us how we made a crappy treaty with the natives and let them live, they teach us this over and over.

I think Sweden in our 5 years of history was mentioned once in the 30 years wars, never again... Most of our middle age-modern history focuses on the Italian wars... Before EUII I hardly knew Sweden was a great power or did something noteworthy in history
