Why doesn't Vassalisation/Annex work?

Ok, my game with Prussia has progressed nicely. After renewing my alliance with Brandenburg and Thuringen all I had to do was give 3 Letter of Introduction to Thuringen, and they became my vassals.

The year is 1522. The reformation happened, but for all 3 of our states the pop. is protestant but the state religion Catholic. It's been more than 10 yrs, and yet I cannot annex (or try to) Thuringen. Why? It is +200, same alliance (I am leader), royal marriage.... WHY NOT?

Brandenburg is +195... I cannot try to make them vassals, again... WHY NOT?
 
Sorry, but I'm still confused (it has been a long day).

You are Prussia. Thuringen is your vassal. You now want to vassalize Brandenburg and annex Thringen. You have a royal marriage with both, are in the same alliance (with you as the leader), have +195/+200 relations and Thuringen has been your vassal for the required ten years. As for religion, all three used to be Catholic, but now all three are Protestant. (When you say 'state relgion' I assume you mean their OLD religion.) But the vassal and annex options don't even light up.

Are you at war? I've read elsewhere that you can't vassalize or annex a country if you are at war. If you are at war, make peace for the alliance and see it that helps.

Furthermore, state religion probably refers ... well ... to the state religion, not to the old religion.
So all three are protestant but state religions are all catholic.
I think i experienced the same phenomenon in my last game. You can only peacefully annex provinces that share the same region-religion that you have as state religion, i assume.

My guess is that his problem is either:

1. That even though the provinces share the same religion, it's a different than the state religion.

2. The alliance is at war. (I'm not sure if peace is a requirement, but I've seen it suggested elsewhere.)
 
Thank you for your advice, but I think this is just a serious game flaw.

1) I do not need to share a border.
2) I am not at war

I discovered that it is a bug. It's not letting me because even though we are all Catholic nations, our subjects are protestant. So for some reason my state religion has to be the same as the province's peasants' religion.
 
You do NOT need a common border. I know this because I tested it. I put the game on fastest setting and I converted to protestant, they did as well... then I waited till it was back to +200 and Annex became available.
 
I am pretty sure (after playing a number of games) that you must possess a coomon border.

The chances of success are much increased if the client state has low stability ratings, however. Look for a dumb DoW and then annex them, is my policy (of course, you inherit their curses as well as their assets) !

Which country did u diplo annex then without a common border ?
 
You do not have to have a common border to annex - England annexed Hannover in my last GC, and Spain annexed Naples. Unless the AI doesn't need one and we do. Or maybe you and the prospective annexee (sp?) need to both have a coastline. Only thing I could think of that makes sense.
 
Some countrys are coded, I think, to vassalize/annex to nations that annexed/vassalized them historically.

That's why England gets to annex Hanover (though in history, it was really the house of Saxe-Couberg-Gothe {Hanovers royal house} ascending to the throne of England), and Spain gets Naples due to the Aragonese patrimony brought to Hapsburg.

But did they diplo annex them ? England quite often inherits Hannover and Sicily and Naples share a common border as troops can cross the strait without needing ship transport.

Hmmm... don't remember if the message said anything about inheriting Hannover, I thought it just said 'England has annexed Hannover, which is now part of their realm.' I do remember Hannover being vassalized, and it was more than ten years, but I was taken aback by the annexation because I had always needed a common border to annex. It may have been just coincidence though.

Spain owns Sicily?? I never noticed, I've always been in Central Europe. I can't tell my Uncle Gino this ever happened, it would be the death of him... ;)

That'd be the exact message in case of inheritance though and seeing I am fairly xure u need a common border to diplo annex it must have been that, most likely.

He can rest assured though, ur unle Gino, it was in fact the Sicilian maffia who ran Spain ;)
 
You can inherit a country by random event without a common border - you just can't *propose* an annexation.

As Portugal, I once inherited Savoy.
