Why is our Direct Join not working? Why different game lists? [SOLVED]

Hi, first time multiplayer for me and a friend.

Same version 2.6.3, same checksum, mods disabled on both sides.

We try Direct Join - not working (I host, have more DLCs) - friend just sees "Connecting..." forever, no error, no nothing.

We try Invite player from Steam (both are on Steam )-- same thing -game opens, shows the Connecting... message, nothing happens.

Curiously, in Multiplayer game list, I see only ~8-9 games in the list, he sees way more (can scroll), and they are different.

We have same region in Steam selected (Download Region).

Solution: we were on different "branches" in Steam.

I was on test branch.
Friend wasn't.

Despite this, game version (2.6.3), build number, as well as checksum were shown as identical (!)
