I don't get what people could possibly have against pre-orders. It is practically the same as buying a product normally.
Anyways, pre-ordering through Paradox already gets you a Steam code.
You pre-order if there's a risk the product will run out, and ordering it beforehand is a way to make sure you'll actually get it. Digital products doesn't run out.

They could make it so that DLCs run out I guess. A limited edition DLC would be weird as hell though.

I believe Creative Assembly gave an explanation on why pre orders are a thing in the digital age.

The reasoning (I know some would probably say "excuse") is that high preorder numbers is something you can take to the people in charge of the purse strings as proof that the game is worth further investment. Especially for developers like CA and Paradox that tend to supply regular content updates rather than a couple DLCs and move on.
No, thats what preorder used to mean ;)
Better price + gadgets ;)
But still, if Paradox dont want to give a cut to Valve why they wont put keys on better sale price? For ex -10%?

Probably because the agreement they have with Valve won't let them. Undercutting the store that sells your product by selling to consumers directly is probably one of the best ways to get said store to stop selling your stuff.

An excuse indeed, they could easily use previous sales, forum sentiment, current playerbase, 1st week sales and other data to make their point.

For me it's an easy thing. It's better for the developer and I'm not losing anything doing it, because it's the exactly same price I would pay for it later on. But I'm only doing it for games that I love, where I'm buying everything new that comes out. If you are picky about what DLC you buy, just wait for the reviews.

On a side note, I'm not seeing any disrupted market out there. Sure, there are some AAA developers that go crazy, but I'm mostly not playing their games and if I do I'm not trusting them enough to preorder stuff. I'm pretty much observing the opposite thing, all the new pre-ordering, pre-realease sales etc, that are seen as toxic by many are helping smaller companies to publish and develop their high quality not-mainstream games faster and much easier than before.

For financing there is early acess and kickstarter fig and whatnot. If a publisher or a studio have to resort to preorder for financeing theor game you should be especially wary.

And maybe you are a responsible customer who does preprder in a responsible way, most people simply are not, cause we arent evolved to be responsible with our money
