Hundreds. Potentially over 1000, if we populate all the counties that aren't part of some liege's demesne, and the genealogy group seems to be headed that way.

history/titles/. Ignore all b_*.txt files unless it contains a holding_dynasty line. (Those are patrician palaces.) Take the last holder line in each file. If its value isn't 0, look it up in history/characters/. Take the name field as given name and look up the dynasty field in common/dynasties/ for surname.

The first character of the filename in history/titles defines the title rank (b = barony, c = county, d = duchy, k = kingdom, e = empire.) To get the name associated with the title, you'll have to find the filename (without filetype, so k_isauria is what you'd search for, not k_isauria.txt) in localisation/.

I'm sure a programmer with the right tools could whip up a list in short order. I, alas, don't have the right tools.

Thanks, I certainly have no skill at programming. Just so I don't have to alt-tab back and forth, I am using a notebook and writing down the basics as I look at the map. I'm going to focus on Iberia today. Will there be any upcoming changes in certain regions I should stay away from for now? For instance, India and Africa I'm going to stay away from until the proper release.

Thanks FG! I've definitely got enough time on my hands and interest in LI to take care of this. I'm no modder, and I can't donate money to my favorite mods. So it will be nice for me to be able to give something back to the community. My first time selecting a starting point in LI was daunting, to say the least. I think a thread like this will be quite useful. I appreciate, welcome, and NEED any support you guys can give. I never saw any of Shay's original posts, but I think I understand what you mean. I don't know how much room that would take up in a thread. I'm just going to start with a basic list, acquire any suggestions in this thread, and focus on making it "pretty" once there is a good amount of content.

Listing the characters in LI is one thing, and it would be quite useful on its own. However, I'm in need of the why. Please share any AARs, or just anecdotes from your games. I've only been playing LI for the better part of the year, so I need to know the experiences of others to really make this an interesting read.

Karzan's post is exactly what I'm looking for. Thank you very much! Very nice formatting, just like in the Original Thread. I've also tried that start, and managed claims on Rhodos and Crete. Didn't work out so well when those large armies came knocking...

What I like is something like Seleukia. Nice, big province, close to Cyprus (no need for ships to actually move to ship your men over, essentially being used as a bridge). Wait for Isauria to go to war, or after the Emancipation war, go to town on them.

I have yet to play a game where Isauria doesn't dominate Anatolia. Interesting concept of not needing to move your ships to other ocean zones. I remember one time moving my character and his generals from Cyprus to Crete. I didn't realize there was a scripted event which can lose your characters in a storm. Now that was an interesting, yet devastating surprise.

Still fewer characters than vanilla.

Heheh, it's funny you should say that. Seleukia (the theme) was actually quite small in the Byzantine Empire; as part of a realism feature, I've given most of that province to neighboring Attaleia.

Unless you mean the realm Seleukia, in which case it's been renamed Kilikia.

Them Luwian bonuses

The Luwians will probably not be quite as strong once they have to deal with Tarhuntite, Illuyankan, and Solar-Christian vassals...

Agreed; I think that was the intention all along :)

So...much...work....and information to sort through! Gotta love the depth of LI, though!

I always use the daily SVN. Are there any big character or region changes on the way? I'm starting in the West because I figure things there will pretty much stay the way they are in the next update.

Carthage, Kingdom of
Huneric: Huneric is the Vandal Arian king of Carthage. Other people will put up rulers who have longer family trees or strategic positions on the map, but Huneric has them all beat for one very important reason.

He has predetermined traits. And those traits are kinslaying leper poet.

So, to try to get something up quickly I am going through the 49 "Interesting Characters" listed on the Character selection screen. I hope the expansion won't double that number...well not really. More is better, right?

Adding my love of Huneric. He's basically Baldwin from Kingdom of Heaven (probably smacked some fool across the face with a horsewhip while growling "I am Carthage and you will give me the kiss of peace!"). It's a race to get a male heir before he dies so his line won't end. I found him a wife who was like a cross between Empress-Dowager Sophie and Nancy Botwin; she kept the little brat alive and on the throne until he could make his daddy proud.

I've noticed Huneric but have yet to play as him. Definitely one of the more interesting characters! Seems like he's getting a lot of love. I'll make him a priority!

The biggest obstacle is that every character in LI is enjoyable in their own way. Gotta love this mod!

Here are my favorites :
- the Seleukids : well here the goals are quite known and given by the bloodline. Reform Arche Seleukeia and then Arche Makedonia.
-The Ptolemaoi : here I'm talking from the Kyrenean ones but I have not tried the new dynasties from Furor Africanus but they got the same goal with an Ancient Egyptian touch. Reconquer Egypt and then crush the other Diadokhoi
-the Vandals of Carthage : you are a German tribe installed in Africa, Arians and ypu begin with a Leper king ! Who knows best :p ?
The goals are to form the Carthaginian Empire and fullfill the last sentence of Genseric "Roma Delenda Est"
-The Artorians : Arturus Pendragon anyone ?
-The Merovingians : the heirs of Clovis with a religion influenced by Da Vinci Code
-Bactria : with the expension you are in the middle of the region. You can expand in India,Serindia or even Eranshar with the goal of recreating Arche Makedonia !
There are others but well they are the first who come to my mind

I like the Iskenderids myself. A great religion - even if converting is a pain -, limited aims (taking Egypt) but no allies, a real challenge and well, playing Islamic Platonicians heirs of Megas safekeeping the liberary of Alexandria is pretty nice
