I'm not sure what I did wrong, but I am have a really hard time building an army as Germany. I built IC for 2 years, built units for 1+ year, and had about 270 IC by the time I invaded Poland. I simply have a pitiful number of units, and I think its because of the extended build times of units. I only have 85 divisions and its about to be spring 1940. I'm going to try to invade France with 55 divisions and probably epically fail.

The main problem I have observed is that air support does virtually nothing. I have tried to use TAC and CAS to effect breakthroughs and they never turn the tide of battle, as they should when unopposed.

What am I doing wrong? I conquered the world as Poland in DAIM, so I am by no means a HOI2 noob.

What is a workable build?

I am having roughly the same game as you, except I'm at the start of '41 now.

Don't worry yet, if you have enough tanks and MOT/SS, you can break through to paris via Ghent > Amiens > Versailles, and start capturing the unguarded territory to the north and east. France seem to mass loads of divisions on the Maginot line, ignore it.

I thought I had a severe shortage of infantry and air power when I invaded Poland. It was hard but if you use your armour and air power correctly it should be alright. I managed to invade Poland, Denmark, Norway and Holland before May '40 when I invaded France using the method described above. France capitulated in July, it was a bit harder. Then I finished off Belgium and annexed Luxembourg.

Now, after invading Yugoslavia and Greece, having no chance of Sealion I ignored Britain apart from some Air battles in France and Convoy raiding with my Subs.

It's almost time for Barborossa now, I don't have enough divisions so I may postpone it for a year, you should be OK in the west, but the scene is set for my epic fail in the east! :D

I'm getting the impression it is meant to be quite difficult to win the war. Why shouldn't it be? :D

What difficulty are you on BTW?

i think you are overbuilding IC, and maybe having some issues with the ministers. did you change hjlamar schat? dont. quickly reduce the dissent and keep him. those 10% IC is worth it. what are you building in your army? remember, germany is not attrition, is quick destruction of the enemy. i always begin my germany games with at least 1 serial run of factories, and after that 2 serial runs of tanks, then i tech rush motorized so i can do a 2 serial of motorized as well, as well as infantry and interceptors. thats all you really need. my strategy first is a destruction of the pocket in poland, then encirclement and destruction of warsaw. no problems there.
