Last I checked, which was admittedly a while back, it was vapourware with a dev team who kept getting themselves banned. All the same, even the best mod for HOI3 would still be just a mod.

That situation is gone, and work is progressing, I wouldn't get it just yet, there are still a couple of major issues, but the next version should take care of those, it's actually really fun right now.

Just been watching Part 3 of Jeremy Paxman's BBC series on World War 1, and found myself wondering which Paradox title covered that war... Which is how I ended up on this thread - thanks Google.

I agree with some of the previous posts, that (thematically at least) WW1 feels more like it belongs in the Victoria games. That's where you'd expect to find it, out of the existing Paradox series.

However, I was re-watching "The World at War" recently, and there's a piece in that series where a historian put forth his view that World War 1 and World War 2 were really the two halves of one long European war, with a hiatus in the middle during which the various sides regrouped and rebuilt. I hadn't really thought of it that way before, but it's probably true.

Anyway, it made me think that it could make sense to treat it that way - as one long war - in a Paradox game that starts with WW1, covers the rebuilding period, and ends where Hearts of Iron begins, importing your data into HoI to continue the war.

to model WW1 correctly youd probably have to have mobile borders and fronts, these mobile borders in war would be best suited for a HOI game: so im guessing we'll probably see a WW1 official expansion when HOI is more fully fleshed out

You could easily mod HoI3 into giving you a pretty good WW1 experience. Would be a massive undertaking though.

Y'know, given that there's serious interest in it, it'd be nice if people could pay someone to create such an experience. If only we knew where to find people who were both comfortable with working with Clausewitz games and dependable enough to spend the required time on such a massive undertaking, in exchange for that money...

I wonder if someone might have already made a WW1 mod for HOI3. Wherever could I find that information? Perhaps here?

I played an earlier version, and it was a lot of fun. A nice change of pace. :)
Jupp, thats the one to go for HoI3.
Also look at for more info on DH:
HoI3:
WW1-Mod
There is also a german Modding group modding a WWI mod at this time. They have no version out but work also already 1/2 year on it.

My final goal with my AHOI-Mod is also to be able to play from ~1900-1970.
I made a complete new techtree for that already(1001 new techs, giving around the same amount per techs/year as HoI3) and a first version of new production-ai/research-ai to cover that timeframe. The current version covers only WW2 though. See my sig for more infos.
I personally think so far, that the game has everything to model also WW1. It is just very work intensive to get it done.

Then we have already much more polished Mods for Darkest Hour wich has a WW1 scenario built in already..:
Mod1914-for-Darkest-Hour -Is an update of the older HoI2 Mod.
Arms-Armistice-and-Revolutions-Announcements -Enables DH WW1 sceanrio to be connected with its WW2 sceanrio.
And the new project The-Grand-Campaign-(AAR+NWO)
(wich lets you play from 1914-1964, as it combines DH and the Mods AAR+NWO)

So "Paradox" did already made a WWI game to some extend. :)
Ask the DH coders if you miss some urgent WWI feature. They might add it in an patch maybe.. ;)

Cheers,
Chromos

Yeah, the hoi3 ww1 mod is very playable and balanced, we have a small MP community and everything.

That's a great mod, one I've given more than a few plays with. I would absolutely love, though, to see Paradox do either a dedicated game for WW1, or an decent expansion of HOI4 for it. It's the right time for it, and HOI4 is shaping up to be the right tool for the job.

The hardcoded pieces that are missing from ww1 are:
-flexibility around dig-in bonus, so that for example tanks and engineers can negate opposing dig in bonus
-ability to model gas attacks
-attrition being dependent on opposing artillery concentration
-tactical AI which is optimized for the meat grinder battles which make up WW1, as opposed to WW2 movement warfare
-naval AI that conforms to a concentration of force and fleet in being doctrine prevalent during ww1
-a more accurate restriction on amphib invasions (requiring months of planning and a high chance of plans leaking to the enemy for example)

I'll agree all your points and raise you:

- Semi-permanent fortifications (i.e., your troops dig trenches when left in defence that only degrade slowly after they leave the province, and these trenches can be taken over by other troops - enemy or friendly).
- Dynamic tag creation and flag/name-switching to properly model the civil wars of the period.

Actually, maybe a WW1 DLC for HOI4, or even a WW1 Clausewitz 3.0 stand-alone game, might be something that BL could interest themselves in?

Maybe BL-Logic guys can take up this job to make ww1 game after evsw is properly released

Since Paradox have pretty much shelved EvW as a full release, I hope that if they're going to do it, they don't wait for EvW.
