This is just stupid. 90% of the time when I attack someone I am downwind from them. What kind of moron captain would attack upwind in a sailing vessel? I tried reloading and attacking from another direction on the strategic mab, but it makes no difference. There must be some way to see the wind direction before attacking, maybe I'm just too stupid to see it.

The wind in your face will only help the enemy if he is sailing towards you. If this is the case try to maneuver your fleet off to the sides of the battle map. Let the enemy come to you while you set up a trap or work to gain the weather gauge.

Even with the wind at your back the battles are mind-numbingly slow. I doubt I will do anything fancy like that. I guess I'll just have to reload until I get it right.

I agree no-one but a complete buffoon would attack from down-wind in the real world. Also in the real world the speed differentiation between ships was maybe a knot or two. Fore & Aft rigged vessels could sail quite a bit closer to the wind than a square rigger, but down wind would loose. Obsolete ship types quickly fell into dissuse (read galleon & Flute). Cutters were used almost exclusively as coastal vessels. Vessels were either fitted out as military or trading and their crew size was defined by their usage. Trading vessels rarely carried enough crew to effectively fight the ship. Mostly because that many mouths to feed would severally limit their cargo space. (he says stepping down off soap box )

However in the game the AI always sails straight at you. When the do run away it is usually down wind you may have a chance to cut them off.

Like the other poster said. Time compression is your friend. If you have not installed the patches I would definitely recommend it soon.

Greg.

You can also mod wind push so all the ships move faster and the game become even more arcade. It will make battles much faster and easier.
