Hello, I just bought EU2 and after installing it I tried to run the game up. But all I got was a black screen and I had to alt-ctrl-del to quit the "not responding" game. Apparently this continued to happen when once, I think by accident, the game jumped into its intro movie. I saw Strategy First's animation logo. That was all I got to see, the game went back to usual the black screen afterwards.
What I would like to know is is this a common problem? Has any body else had the same experience?

I have installed the patch and the directx8 which is required, from the CD. I dunno why this is happening, first time for any software to go bad on my PC. Especially since Windows Xp has been so stable... Or could that be a factor.

This should have been posted in the support forum (Sean? State? can you move this with a redirect please? :)

See the running problems thread in the support forum, your question might have been answered there.

Some graphic cards do not yet have drivers that are completely compatible with XP. I suggest that you check with the manufacturers. I am almost sure that your card is one that requires new drivers. Download the latest ones available and try again :)

Believe it or not, this works for me.

When the black screen comes up ... right click.

Give it a go.

... and if that didnt work then try taking out the CD and clicking - that worked for someone else!
Its a strange world..................:)

Yes it is strange indeed!
I've finished formatting and installing a new windows --changed my old XP to a new 98!
Well, thankfully it works now and from the look of things win98 is still a great piece of software. :D

I appreciate the support and attention from this forum regarding my problem.
Hopefully, from my experience of this problem something could be learnt to help another person in need.

thanks, and have a nice day :)

There seems to be a problem with Bink and XP, but I don't have enough detail yet to post a bug report on bugzilla.

I'm going to create a sticky about it.

Sometimes it does, sometimes it doesn't...

I am also running EU2 under XP. I've noted that sometimes I'll run EU2 and get the black screen and other times it'll run okay. Being that XP is a WinNT based system, I gave the three-finger salute and forced the task manager to run the Bink player and everything runs okay after that. Seems to be something wrong in the OS giving control to the player so it can run. I've not had any other issues with it though. (In other words, I can play the game in spite of this hangup, just takes a little more effort than it should.)

Now that I think on it, it seems to happen most often on the first time the game runs after startup. Occasionally after that.

Happens to me under Windows 2000 occasionally, as well. Just give it the Vulcan nerve pinch :D (or three finger salute, if you prefer) , nailing the bink.exe usually does the trick, and switching back to the game task. Sometimes the "not responding" bink player does respond to beating esc, though. Not a frequent occurrance, in any case. On the plus side of things, W2K+EU2 seems to be remarkably resistent to all sorts of junk going on in the background (my personal favourite was doing the defrag with norton systemworks 2k1 while playing a game. Worked like a charm.)
