We've started the full localization of the game, based mostly on my unpublished experience with translating EU4. Lessons learned from EU4 were to get in there early, instead of a couple of years after the core game has been published with loads of DLCs, and to get a team. Otherwise the amount of text becomes quickly overwhelming for a single person.

Currently we're looking at over a million characters to translate, estimated at around 70-75 mandays' work. At the time of writing the team already has some volunteers: three translators, a QA guy and a voiceover lady with a husky voice for UI notification messages. Two of the translators still have their university exams left to go, so I hope we'll kick into high gear in June.

My gripes with the localization are minor, other than not having all the localization strings inside the proper folder. Yes, I'm looking at you, common\random_names\, common\name_lists\ and common\scripted_effects. You can run but you can't hide!

I'm using Trados for the translation, leveraging my EU4 translation memory (not that useful, as it turns out). The other translators will submit their texts by email, which I'll integrate into the main translation memory and export into the mod as UTF-8-BOM encoded YAML files. Hopefully Trados will help with managing future updates to the string files, as was the case with EU4 DLCs.

After this first week we're about 5% done with the text and about 30% done with the voiceovers. At this pace we'll kick this puppy out the door before Xmas, though I certainly hope we'll be done earlier.

We have a website for coordinating the translation, a Twitter feed and a localization mod on Steam Workshop that's being updated every other day or so.

If you're Hungarian and reading this, consider joining the project. Any additional strings that get translated bring the completion date closer.
