Wooing Hungary

I'm playing in the GC as Austria, and I want to diplomatically annex Hungary really badly, but they keep turning me down. I have about 7 more provinces than them, and +200 relations. I'm trying to build up my wealth, since I've heard that helps, but it hasn't worked yet. Does anyone have any tips? Should I buy Hungary roses? Take its monarch to a candelight dinner? Send chocolates? Write poetry? (oh Hungary, how do I want to annex thee? Let me count the ways)
Any ideas?

From your post it sounds like you've managed to vassalize Hungary at least... Lucky you - I haven't even been able to get that far. It's around 1610 and even though we've had great relations and have been in the same alliance since the beginning, they still turn me down. And my Austria is huge - I've been working on uniting the entire HRE under Austrian rule and I am only a few provinces away from that goal. Plus I've got a few conquests outside that and several colonies and TPs (I tweaked the game to give Austria a small supply of colonists).



Only reason I can see for Hungary's denial is the fact that with my friendship they've become quite fat and happy - greedily taking several provinces from Poland-Lithuania, never having less than +3 stability, and having no reason to fear military action due to our alliance.



I've resigned myself to never annexing them, as adding such a huge amount of territory to my already bloated empire would probably do more harm than good...

If I were Hungary, you could easily buy me with chocolate!!!
Sounds like a really bad luck or maybe Hungary is at war with someone and that's prevent you from even getting the option of annexing them.
Anyway, do it when the diplomatic skills of your Monarch is high. I think it helps a little.

Yep, Hungary can be a tough cake, but it's manageble. After I annexed (diplo) Venice and Bohemia, they finally agreed to be vassalized. After 10 years, i offered them annexation and they got so upset they canceled vassalisation . But then, i'm a stubborn little bastard and vassailised them again. And finally, in 1577, Hungary joined my realm. It's hard, but it's possible. Oh, and they lost one province to Turkey as well.

Yesterday I diplo annexed Hungary under the rule of Maximilian I

Just be as much bigger (size, armies) as possible, good diplomat king and some luck.
