1938

Great Asian War (November 6th, 1937 - )

The Royal Navy moves its Asiatic Fleet to protect Hong Kong while expedionary forces from India attempt to bolster the Nationalists. Throughout the year, the Japanese win battle after battle. Nanking falls on April 10th. The "Nanking Massacre" story runs on the front page of every U.S. newspaper. Communist China is annexed by the Japanese on October 21st and Mao is executed after a show trial in Taipei.

On January 3rd, Lithuania joins the Axis. Hitler pressed the Austrian president to join the Greater Reich in March. The president, fearing German invasion, attempted a compromise and publicly announced his intention to join the Axis. Hitler, enraged at this feeble attempt to maintain autonomy, sent Lt. General Heinrich and his 10th Mountain dressed in Austrian "Brown Shirt" uniforms to surround the presidential palace in Vienna. On April 4th, Austria officially joined the greater Germany. On September 30th the Treaty of Munich is signed after Chamberlain assures the rest of the Allies this will appease Hitler. The Sudetenland becomes German soil.

This is going to be very interesting indeed, none of the silliness of the last AAR.

I look forward to the post 39 write up with great interest indeed.

Well done!

Don't get your hopes up. It only takes one player to turn fairly historical game into something completly crazy. Which just hapenned during last session.

Axis is Germany, Italy, Japan, and France (France which still has its whole army).

USA warentry is down to 66 from 97, Soviet is about 20-30 and UK is way below zero.

Oh, and USA is turning communist.

The French peoples are not overly concerned with the Fascists point of view. Afterall, we are still stronger. The League of Nations has erred. However, as upstanding members of the international community, we reluctantly abide and accept their decisions.

The Ethiopa incident is most unfortunate.

A very turbulant year for the fine peoples of France. There are many incidents which alarm the country into a state of heightened awareness. The Ethiopians as mentioned early were dispatched of early by the vile Italian Fascists. Relations are severly strained between the two countries.

Negotiations are fully underway with the United Kingdom and with the United States. French Government is confident they can count on those two nations to remain sane in what is quickly becoming an insane world.

It is expressed to Germany that reoccupation of the Rhineland does not sit well with 13% of the French people. However, while nervous, France is not overly concerned.

Once Albania was mercilessly attacked by Italy, the relations between the French government and the Italian government collapsed. Due to the time it takes to mobilize forces, we were unable to assist the tortured Albanians. A travesty to say the least.

When Franco attempts to overthrow the Republicans in Spain, the French decide to take action. The United States request not to intervene on Franco's behalf is honored. The French people are not happy and the Government detects dissent. However, we do send 3 Mechanized Divisions of France's finest to assist the Republican Spainards. At first they are rejected several times by the Republicans due to a supply communications error involving the Republicans and the United Kingdom.

Along with the United Kingdom's Freedom force, after a bloody battle, the revolt is quashed. The French Army on loan returns home with valuable experience to many parades.

The election of FDR in the US is highly welcomed by the French peoples. The French government is reaffirmed in its queries that it can count on the US in times of need. This pleases France.

The China issue, in light of the recent events, is not much concern for the French people at this time.

France begins to open diplomatic channels to the SU. The relations can be described as cold at best. France is unclear of the Soviet's intentions. We shall watch these developments closely.

Of great importance is the Axis Alliance that occurs this year. It confirms France's worst fear and now the indispicable Hitler and Mussolini are one in the same. France realizes the time is now to begin beefing up it's home armies and to continue construction on the Maginot line. As well as to make preparations to consider a state of readiness for her armed forces.

The China situation draws attention, but much closer issues geographically demand France's utmost attention. Namely, they are continued relations with the UK and the US to muster support for the absolute unacceptable aggression of the new Axis Alliance that had formed earlier in the year.

1938

Great Asian War (November 6th, 1937 - )

On September 30th the Treaty of Munich is signed after Chamberlain assures the rest of the Allies this will appease Hitler. The Sudetenland becomes German soil.

On November 9th, fearing Axis and Commintern aggression, Oman agrees to join the Allies.

Attention indeed does focus on the China situation. France desperately wishes to assist their friends of the US and UK in their efforts.

France unfortunately is in no position to help due to a scandal that further increases her populations dissent. Precious time and resources are being wasted to reduce this dissent. The scandal along with the earlier Franco incident puts France in a tough situation.

Matters worsen with Austria caving into Hitler's demands after initially making a stand. The French are very pleased with the Austrian's initial reaction and then are quickly quieted when the final outcome happens. The French voice their opinion to a seemingly oblivious Axis alliance. The calls go unheeded.

Relations with the SU begin to prosper somewhat, however, France still remains unclear on their intentions thoroughout the year. Especially when all of a sudden, Republican Spain ousts the current government and replaces it with a Stalinist regime. It is clearly very concerning to France now that they are faced with the possibility of having said government in such close proximity.

The year closes with France feeling as vulnerable as ever. It has noticed a distinct buildup of Italian and German forces on her border. Previously, 12 German Divisions in the North, and 6 Italian Divisions in the south were estimated by Intelligence. At the close of the year, 18 German and 14 Italian respectively were estimated to be near the border. A sizable increase. Also noted were Italian buildups in N. Africa. Very disturbing.

A sense of growing aggression is in the air.

1939 (thru March 17th)

The Japanese continually make advances in China. As of mid-march, a full third of China is under Imperial control.

On March 15th, Czechoslavakia is dissolved with Bohemia being incorporated into the Riech and a new National Socialist Slovakia state joining the Axis. On March 16th, after being given several Slovakian provinces, Hungary joins the Axis.

As we close this chapter, this winds of war seem all but inevitable...

The China situation has dropped off the French government's list of top concerns. While unfortunate, there continue to be other pressing matters. These matters include the reduction of the dissent of the population, the buildup of hostile Axis forces on her home borders, and the Soviet Concern in Spain. Furthermore, acquiring assistance from the US and UK is being confirmed. Also, French border defenses are put on top priority second only to appeasing the population.

Relations continue very nicely with the UK and US. The SU seems to be more open on a daily basis.

The Czech debacle is most unfortunate indeed and confirms to France she is in danger, a danger which seems to be mounting daily. Hungary joins in the Axis and further worsens our situation.

Meanwhile, diplomatically, Greece and Turkey are constantly being sent French envoy's to affirm their positions. It does not go unnoted that there are also many Italian and German envoy's being sent as well.

France is unclear of what the immediate future brings...

Spring 1939

With a war of unprecendented scale raging in China, Europe was a tinderbox. France, Germany, the Soviet Union and the British all vied for influence over the minor nations of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East.

On March 18th, Germany, desperately short of oil and rubber and embargoed by France and the UK, brokered a secret deal with the United States in exchange for German knowledge of tactical bombing.

On March 20th, Molotov delivered a secret communique to Rippentrop, "The Americans have exploded a nuclear device in New Mexico". This immediately concerned and terrified the two dictators. The Molotov-Rippentrop Pact was signed in secret, Poland would be split and there would be a non-agression pact between the two nations. Spheres of influence were agreed upon.

Hitler began positioning German armor and mechanized infantry on the Polish border. Before the Wermacht could strike, the United Kingdom proclaimed a guarentee of Polish independence on March 30th. Poland joined the Allies. Operation Vulture was post-poned.

On April 3rd, the New York Times broke a story that Japanese paramilitaries had attempted and failed to institute a coup in the Phillipines. US-Japanese tensions were at an all-time high.

On June 1st, with the barbarians at the gates, the Chinese officially entered the Alliance. British "volunteers" became regulars. Montgomery landed in Bombay and took command of the Far East Asian Joint Command. The conflict at this time was limited to the Chinese theatre only. In response to China joining the Allies, Japan and Germany joined forces. Japan officially joined the Axis on June 24th.

WORLD WAR II June 27th - September 19th 1939

Allied Nations: United Kingdom, France, Poland, Australia, South Africa, Canada, New Zealand, Oman, Nationalist China

Axis Nations: Germany, Italy, Japan, Lithuania, Slovakia, Hungary

German strategic bombing elements under Goering began striking at the French industrial sector. The USA ceases oil shipments to Germany.

Battle for Poland June 27th - July 8th

On June 27th, Germany launched a three pronged attack into Poland. To the north, II Korps initiated a seige of Danzig. To the south, X Mountain Korps attacked Poznan, while panzer and mechanized units attacked in the central plains. Elements of Luffewaffe supported all elements. German forces quickly advanced until the lines stabilized along the Vistula on July 1st. On July 6th, the Poles counter-attacked north of Warsaw and broke through the German lines. After hard fighting the counter-attack was pushed back and the Wermacht rolled ove the remaining Polish forces. Poland was officially annexed on July 8th.

Naval Conflicts - Pacific Theatre

Battle of the Coral Sea July 3rd
Battle of the Sea of New Ireland July 6th
Battle of Truk Sea July 20th

The Australian Navy catches a Japanese task force in the Coral Sea and sinks or damages the majority of its capital ships. The Australians chase the Japanese task force and catch them in the Sea of New Ireland sending most of task force to the bottom. On July 20th, while steaming home to repair, The Austalian Navy is caught by Japanese naval aircraft from Imperial Navy's carriers and annihilated.

Battle of Italian East Africa July 8th - July 16th

British troops landed in Mogadishu on July 8th while elements of the South African army attacked from the south. Mogadishu fell
on July 11th and Addis Abeba was liberated 5 days later.

North African Campaign

Elements of the Italian army and Afrika Korps attacked Egypt on June 29th. The English routed the joint attack and then overran the retreating Fascists. Africa Korps was completely annihilated on July 2nd. In a suprise outcome, the Kriegsmarine defeated a carrier task force of the Royal Navy in the Gulf of Libya on July 7th allowing elements of the Italian army to be evacuated. Throughout July the UK pushed out across North Africa until only a small pocket of Italian defenders remained in NW Libya. On July 17th, Heydrich and his elite Falschirm Korps "the Fledermas", paradropped into Algiers introducing this new form of warfare and cut off the French army advancing on the Italians in Libya. The lines stabilized and a trench warfare ensued for the remainder of the conflict.

Yugoslavian Campaign August 2nd - August 16th

The Axis declared war on Yugoslavia on August 2nd. Yugoslavia joined the Allies. The wermacht, spearheaded by Manstein's Panzers blitzed East overruning the Yugoslavs again and again. The first major air battles of the war occured between the Luffewaffe and the Yugoslav Airforce during this conflict. On August 16th, Belgrade fell to the "Fledermas" paratroopers and Yugoslavia was annexed.

Croatia created on August 16th. On August 27th, Hitler honored the Molotov-Rippentrop Pact and ceded Eastern Poland to the USSR.

French Offensive

French forces attacked Saerbrucken on August 8th with combined elements of mechanized infantry, army, and tactical bombers. Saerbrucken was overrun on the 9th. Mighty air battles between German me109's, French Breguet 693's and British Spitfires raged over the front. The Luffewaffe's DO-17's were rebased to Berlin and began pounding the French spearhead. The now famous Fledermas were dropped into Luxembourg and after a valient attempt to cut the French supply lines, was KIA'd to the man. The mechanized spearhead blitzed into coastal Germany and the Northern Rhineland. With bulk of German army tied up in Yugoslavia, all that stood between the French and Berlin was one 1 division of Lithuanian infantry.

Battle of Munster (August 15th- 23rd)

The Wermacht counter-attacked into Munster and the province switched sides numberous times. The French offensive stalled as they attempted to secure this vital supply line as Manstein's panzer raced back from the Balkans. Finally, on August 23rd, the entire German III Korps was destroyed.

Race for Berlin (August 23rd - August 30th)

With the destruction of III Korps and the securing of supply, the French raced towards Berlin. On August 30th, Berlin fell. By this time, the bulk of the German army had returned from Yugoslavia and set up defensive lines securing Southern Germany.

German Counter-Offensive (August 25th - September 5th)

Battle of Colmar (August 25th - August 30th)

The Totenkopf Panzers, 3rd Mechanized, and 10th Mountain Korps crossed the Rhine and attacked Colmar on August 25th supported by DO-17 and me109 elements of the Luffewaffe. After six days of some of the most intense fighting of the war with both sides pouring in reinforcements and dropping enough bombs to "block out the sun", the Germans overran Colmar on August 30th, 3 hours after Berlin fell.

"Patriot Games" of the United States

America, still neutral with out of control dissent and a populace screaming for war seemed split between its right and left political factions. American advisors were secretly assisting both the French and German forces. Apparently, the Americans felt their true enemy was the Communists in Moscow and desired an ally in Europe, albiet a weakened one. America requested permission to land U.S. troops in Germany which was flatly denied.

Russo-Prussian "Devil's Bargain"

Stalin, seeing the capitalist forces being arrayed against him, volunteered to send Russian expeditionary forces to liberate and secure Berlin. The Russian expeditionary forces pushed the French out of Berlin on September 1st.

The details of what the Germans promised Stalin in return are unknown to this reporter at this time.

Battle for Paris (August 30th - September 4th)

The Totenkopf Panzers blitzed north cutting of the majority of the French army from its homeland. Mechanized units moved in to secure, while elements of the panzer korps moved west against a lightly defended Paris. French counter-attacks valient but to no avail against the German panzers. Paris fell on September 4th.

Peace in Our Time

Rommel looked across the smoking ruins of Paris and read a communique from his son in Berlin, "Our beautiful city is in ruins papa." General DeGaulle reviewed the quartermaster reports sitting in his command post outside of Hannover. News had reached the front that the "Rhine Fox", Rommel, had taken Paris. Then the calls came in, both commanders were ordered to sit tight, maintain position, but do not advance. A cease-fire was called. Peace talks were held in Geneva. On September 5th, with both nations in ashes, Germany and France made a seperate peace.

Greco-Roman Debacle

With Mussolini busy in Geneva discussing peace terms with the French, on September 9th an overzealous Italian field marshall attacked Crete with caused Greece to declare war on Italy and join the Allies. Ironically, Greece had recently installed a Fascist government and was in talks with Rippentrop about joining the Axis. Furious, Mussolini had the Field Marshall executed and called off the invasion.

Peace

On September 19th and 12 noon GMT, the United Kingdom and Germany officially ended hostilities. The next day, Greece left the Alliance and on September 21st joined the Axis.

Asian Conflict

Japan, uninvolved in the peace talks in Geneva, announced that the war in Asia was a Japanese affair and European deals did not concern it. Pleas by Nationalist China for the Allies to resume hostilities officially fell on deaf ears although British expeditionary forces once again began supporting the Chinese.

Post War World

On October 8th, the French officially left the Allies and ordered all US Forces to leave french soil

claiming neither arrangement was in France's best interests.
Germany expelled Soviet forces and closed its borders to Russian trade on October 10th, claiming Bolshevism was corrupting the German peoples. On October 8th, Bulgaria joined the Axis. On October 24th, the France joined the Axis and the Franco-Prussian Axis was announced.

So, and the year 1939 draws to a close, five power blocs appear to forming out of the ashes of the Second World War.

The Franco-Prussian Axis
The Commintern
The British Empire
The United States
The Japanese Co-Prosperity Sphere

That's all for now.

No silliness, but history has a weird way of taking a turn sometimes. Think of this as a "what if". The butterfly effect if you will. Kind of like in EU (if you played that), those games never ended up historical by 1820.

Uhh..ahem..I guess I missed alot after my unfortunate need to depart last night. Wow, what a turn of events. Never would have seen it going that way. What a mess.

Hey Tom, yeah Poyoloco took over France for the war (after a brief stint from Fort). We're continuing this on Wedsnesday and you have a reserved spot. We'll work out "which administration" gets France (off line not on the threads).

The United States of America perspective

1936

American government decides to battle the recession by governemnt-influenced extremely large industrial expansion. During the year, more industries in every American state are beign built.

Although it leaves a rather small budget for American military and research departments, compounded by public opposition to government military spending.

Thus, military budget hardly suffices for mainaining existing army, even though Army orders 12 heavy mountain divisions. ETA is march 1997 ;)

The research department saw most of its funding going there, and American lead in Electronic and Industrial tech was firmly set up. While army was poor brother, the Navy and Airforce pressure was succesful and Air and Naval branches received funding, too.

Certain scientist convinced Roosevelt to assign some funds to new research project, about advanced physics, or something, even though military men whinned about useless spending.

Foreign relations of USA was rather inconsistent. Apart from traditionally good relations with United Kingdom, which triggered sizeable industrial/research cooperation, there were erratical contacts made with France, Germany, Soviet Union, China, Canada, Australia, and even Japan and Brazil.

American government send a plae to allies governments not to oficially support either side in Spanish civil war which broken out in the summer. The allies answered positively, and the effect of Spanish civil war on American public was the most appreciated by hawks in American government.

1937
Industrial expansion continued, army still didn't got any decent funding, even though it ordered many new divisions, estimated completion time was now sometime in XXIV century :D

With wars breaking out all over the world, American public was gravely split. Relations with outside world grow even more erratic, but government spending steadily increased nevertheless, even Army received some fundings, especially artillery branch (not without Navy involvement, which wanted bigger guns for new ships).

The Anti-Communist faction in American establishment was the strongest this year, seeing as Soviet Union conquered Persia and Finland. It resulted even in ending cooperation with Soviet Union, and France, which was suspected for leftish leanings, and incresing ties with Germany.

1938
Industrial might of United States was ever growing. Even though large portion of it was devoted to continious industrial program, the rest was almost as high as total prior to starting industrial expansion.

Industrial and Electronic US technology achieved all-time high levels, leaving other countries economies way behind. Especially computer industry is what US excelled at.

Shipbuilding and Aircraft industry was also USA strong point.

Internal power struggle saw strenghtening of left wing and weakened right wing. With German and Japan expansion, USA reestablished ties to France and strengtened with Britain. Internal struggle in US politics was stronger than ever, which wasn't without effect on general population mood.

1939

The population support for rearming was higher than ever, probably allowing USA to fund more armament programs that any other alliance combined, including Axis one. Army ordered insane amount of new troops, while Navy and Airforce insisted on developing new classes of warships and aircrafts, called "advanced class", with possible jet engines beign already studied.

The struggle in govermnent achieved all-time heighs with the outbreak of European war, when Germany declared war on France.
It caused USA to immediately stop all its ties to Germany, and devote large amount of industry to produce munitions and other supplies for United Kingdom and France. Which was easily achieved with huge public approval for rearmament.

It doesn't mean that internal fights stopped. Factions in USA governemt still vied for power, even though it was largerly unknown to public.

The war in Europe was at first stalemate, but it all ended when Yugoslavia joined allies. German army conquered it very fast, but then French armies begun advancing into Germany. US governement tried to convince French to stop that, but it was too divided internally to achieve anything lasting. French advance wreaked havoc in internal USA politics, and even allowed to reestablishing ties to Germany (at one moment, US Army advisors sent large number of french-made Bazookas to Germany army...) The internal struggle became obvious to American public after French took Berlin, and Soviet send 'volunteer' troops to help Germany. Varying faction vied for power in American goverment, with various government departments and branches taking sides. Riots started to appearing, incited by all sides, but government was too weak to battle them effectively, involved too much in its internal struggle.

In such mood, the end of European war and sudden shift in alliances, as Germany and France signed peace and formed alliance, while British public decided to isolate themselves, had hardly any further effect on unstable American political scene.

The testing of new devastating weapon in the desterts of Nevada was hardly noticed, too.

The Russian expeditionary forces pushed the French out of Berlin on September 1st.

A more accurate quote would have been:

"The Russian expeditionary forces pushed the French out of Berlin, Landsberg, Stettin, Rostock, Magdeberg, Lubeck, Hannover, Munster, Wilhelmshafen, Hamburg, and Kiel. In proving their world superiority, the Russian tanks also were instrumental in eliminating no less than eight French divisions, despite the fact that most of the French army's tech came from USSR before France pulled a Benedict Arnold.

"Immediately after the war, the USSR was kicked out of Germany, much to Stalin's displeasure. To further add to Stalin's anger, Germany then broke treaty obligations by allying with France. After being beaten by a French army using obsolete Russian tech and needing the USSR to come in and save it, Stalin is expecting major reparations."

No silliness, but history has a weird way of taking a turn sometimes. Think of this as a "what if". The butterfly effect if you will. Kind of like in EU (if you played that), those games never ended up historical by 1820.

EU?

I dont think I've played that one......

Have you maur? *chuckle*

PS Still a very good AAR though

EU? Maybe once or twice, loooong time ago. EU II, on the other hand ;)

Yes true believers,

Unfortunately the Franco-Prussian Alliance is now lost to history. Technical difficulties have forced a restart.

Stay tuned....
