im currently considering buying this agme(as i <3 japanese history), but im not sure when i read the reviews. as of now it looks like a ck2 light thats worse than ck2. anyoen here that can confirm that this is a €30 worth game(after the utter disapointment WotR was for me) for someone intrested in japanese history and strategy games? also, do i understand correctly that becoming shogun ends the game and if someone else becomes it you lose the game?

Don't have CK2 but by the many comments one can imagine CK2 has much more content to it then Sengoku. There is a deep mod for it though that is still being worked on that remedies this to a point.

There is a race that whoever becomes a Shogun wins the game yes in if that ain't you then yep - you lose it.

The game is worth it, although it's not as sandboxy als CKII. It's more combat and expanding. I recommend the mod Monumenta Iaponiae Historica too, it improves the game a lot. Seasonal events, historical events, more historical characters, a new timeline to start during the 1180 Genpei War just to name a few things. I'd say the game is perhaps a lite version of CKII, but if you like Japanese history it is worth it.

Bear in mind that most people in this forum are likely to be the fans of this game, so don't expect any objective statements :)

I would advise you trying a demo version first. Make your own picture about it. It may save you money.

Although I am very interested in Japanese history, I personally regret buying this game. Compared to other PI games, when it comes to the content it doesn't have much to give. It really feels like some alpha version of CK2. In Crusader Kings 2, you have many options how to pursue certain goals - where in Sengoku the whole diplomatic system is pretty straightforward and boring. Furthermore, Sengoku had been abandoned by developers, so we can't expect any more patches.

Please try my mod if you have purchased the game. :)

You're correct, I'm perhaps slightly biased because I like the game. While it is true that CK2 has just more things you can do, it works both ways. With CK2 I sometimes have a feeling that because of so many 'sandbox' options, I can't figure out what I should do. At least in Sengoku you have a very clear purpose, become Shogun. I love CK2 for the sandbox gameplay where you can just do what you like, but sometimes I just want a clear goal and go play. Then again, CK2 is more politics and managing your dynasty. Sengoku is more warfare, less politics. Oh well, I like both for what they do. Besides, Sengoku is like Sengoku 1.5 with the mod mentioned above, imo.

well, i dint really EXPECT a load of non-buy opinions, but at i wa smainly trying to avoid a mispurchase like WOTR where just a quick look on the forum teaches you that its pretty bad(so i watsed €30 becuase i prepurchased). if even the local forums are negative, stay away fromt he game. but with me loving japanese history and appearantly with a great mod that improves gameplay and positive reviews, ill make sure to get it sson(or if im lucky, with a sale)

I'm not entirely sure why this game is compared to CK2 so much, because I finally got CK2 and it is a very different style of game. They have a lot of superficial similarities (vassalage, levies, etc.), but Sengoku is much closer to a pure wargame. CK2 strikes me as partly Sengoku, partly EU, and partly its own thing. Out of the three Paradox games I've played so far -- EU:Rome, Sengoku, and CK2 -- Sengoku encourages war the most, and CK2 discourages it the most. In that way, Sengoku and CK2 are actually nearly opposite.

Is Sengoku a lot simpler than CK2? Heck yes it is -- and I don't think that's necessarily a bad thing. I think it gives the game focus. It's true that it may reduce the game's replay value, but I don't particularly mind. I feel it's still worth the money, and that's the bottom line. :)
