Probably single player, so you can control the game speed without imposing on others at the least. Multiplayer if you find someone willing to be patient and walk you through some stuff.

Lmao of course single player, I wouldn't dare go anywhere near a multiplayer game until I can beat grand admiral on Ironman, I would assume everyone that plays multi is an absolute monster.

Although I would like to point out that multiplayer and singleplayer are different beasts in terms of gameplay. In Singleplayer, you're fighting 'dumb behemoths' with OP resource and fleet buffs (assuming higher difficulties), but abysmal decision making and planet management. In Multiplayer, you're fighting balanced, but intelligent agents that can outplay you.

However, those 'balanced and intelligent agents' all have 1000+ hours in the game and play GA blindfolded, so I would stick to Singleplayer.

Multiplayer LAN with a friend and an agreement to go for a joint win. Stellaris 2.5 is a monster to learn with the systems bolted onto it. And the tutorial needs an overhaul.

if you have friends to help you out, then multiplayer
if not, then single player

granted though there are some things that the tutorial doesn't really go over all that well and could leave you confused
you could always look around for discord groups or even people here that would be willing to play multiplayer and work with you to learn anything you aren't 100% sure about

I’d like to see a community game once per month. 20 beginners and 5 veterans. Each veteran tries to guide his team of 4 beginners to victory, while teaching them the game. The twist: the veterans watch the beginners play through a stream, but have no empire to control directly.

games do allow observers so the need to stream would be minimized...not to mention not every pc can handle running both stellaris and a streaming app

Very true. I wonder if there would be much interest in such an event?

probably after federations is released

the only real downside is there is no way to set up teams in the game

there might be a mod that can do it but i have 0 idea

without that function you would just need 1 noob who has a rough idea of what they are doing to wipe out the rest that have 0 idea

outside of that trying to keep track of who is your team mate and who isn't would be difficult with such a large group

I’m attempting to mod around the problem at the moment ;)

I’ve got the teams set up working correctly already, just having issues with the correct sharing of information with the Veterans (Who have just an enclave like station at the moment, but they’ll have nothing when work is finished) from the beginner empires. I’ll do a proper write up and fresh thread as I feel like I’ve diverged too much from the OP already. But I’ll chuck a link in here.

I cant decide if playing against other players would be better than learning against the AI
Single player.

Multiplayer can be very cancerous. People can't even follow the simplest idea that private games should have passwords, assuming you can even get into a PUB game, then you're likely to be beaten to dust by any of the players there.

Then there are the Stellaris community games which are either complete anarchic battlegrounds where you will get totally demolished or draconian rule based games that eliminate entire portions of the game with the aim of balancing multiplayer.

Neither extreme is very enjoyable to play and they're both awful for a first time player. So either play single player or play with a friend.
