And, yes, I have read the FAQs and most frequent problems . They don't seem to specifically address this.

I have successfully installed EUII and it seems pretty robust.

On downloading and installing the 1.04 patch (North American), I cannot access the EU exe file without a "Wrong Disc Inserted" popup and failure. This appears to be some sort of copy protection - but it only shows up when I install the patch.

I believe I am using the "North American" (i.e. Strategy First) version (I'm in New Zealand). I have a PII 766 computer, Win95, with a DVD drive on E: - I don't have anything set for D:. I can probably found out the video etc cards if necessary, but they seem irrelevant to the problem.

Speculation: the system is either looking for something on D: or it has reset the "name" for the disc, or both.

Is there perhaps a file somewhere which might be reset by installing the patch pointing at an address on D:? Am I out of luck, and forced to play the basic 1.00 EUII?

just by curiosity, did you talk with Strategy first before posting here? Nabil asked me a question about a similar case...

Well, it should be the NA version since it is Strategy First who is the distributor. I would think they would use the same patch, but I can't be sure. If it is the same version they made for North America, it should be at 1.00.

Usually, when you install the game and everything goes fine there is no copy protection problem. If you had copy protection issues, the game wouldn't run at all (you can run the game in 1.00 right?).

If you can't run the game in 1.00, then it is a copy protection issue. And I'd need your complete config (in fact, I'd need the brand of your CD and DVD drive) to be able to help you. If you can install the game and run it, then it is something else.

Technically, the patch should search for files on the driver letter the installation came from. However if you have nothing assigned for D: (wich i find strange  ) it might be confusing it...

try to reassign it to D: by going in the control panel, system, device manager, right-click on your DVD drive, select properties and change the letter for D: if you can.

try it again, and post feedback... :)

Problem is caused by patch

I'm from New Zealand as well and I've had exactly the same problem and have already emailed Ugly Duck about it. The game runs fine in version 1.00 but comes up with an error message after applying the 1.04 patch. I also emailed paradox and received this reply:

"we will be providing at patch that can be found at ozisofts website in a couple of days."

I received the email about last Saturday. No sign of the new patch yet.

No, sorry. I didn't notice any forum at their site, and it's a bit of a pain to navigate.

That puzzled me as well. Yes, I can run it after installing the basic game (1.00). It seems pretty robust - no crashes - although there might be problems with running other software at the same time or when exiting the game, which I can easily live with.

But when I run the 1.04 patch, the "Wrong Disc" notice appears every time I try running the game.

This is a possibility. I am reluctant to try this, having been
warned that there was a Very Good Reason(tm) for my DVD drive to
be assigned to E:. I will take a print of your post, and try it
if the patch The Rusty Gamer mentions doesn't come through.

**Rusty, would it be possible for you to provide a link to the patch when/if you are informed it is available? **

My new speculation is that only people from areas which can be played in EUII get the proper version. Those of us from "neutral provinces" are fobbed off with cheap imitation copies to soften us up until your colonists arrive. Typical colonial trick.

Is this only a problem on when using a DVD drive? If so, it seems likely that it is a regional copy protection issue (NZ DVD != US DVD so I'm assuming the 1.04 patch has trouble figuring that out). Or has this problem also occured in NZ with users with standard CD-ROM drives?

Hullo
I also have this problem as I am from New Zeland aswell. It is so stupid that companies don't check software before they distribute it and make people play for it.

Also EU 2 has no copy protection as I made a copy just before.

I didnt get your e-mail. If you used the Apoly forum to e-mail me then that is why - it doesnt always work.

See my next post. It might be worth waiting for the promised patch as the copy protection *appears* to be stripped. That would explain why ozisoft would have to publish their own patch!

Viper: Your Friend Nabil might have some insight here - might be dirty goings on! :(

Thank you - this is a vital clue!
Strategy First "always" use copy protection on their CDs.
If it doesnt have it then the Patch will *not* take as it looks for it.
It appears that:-
a. It is a bad CD batch
or
b. A pirate copy

Hang on and Viper will contact his Friend and SF Contact Nabil for more info :)

Another "wrong disc inserted"

I am in Australia and I have experienced exactly the same problem reported by Tony.

I recently purchased EU2 ,loaded it successfully and it runs o.k. But after installing the 1.04 patch ( US version ) the game will not run. Instead the message " wrong disc inserted " continually appears. My DVD drive is an NEC DV-5800A.

On a more positive note, congratulations to the guys at Paradox for developing EU1 and EU 2--the most intellectually stimulating strategy games available. Having sampled EU2 before attempting to apply the 1.04 patch it looks great !

So it is very frustrating not being able to try the patched game. I have my fingers and toes crossed hoping somebody out there will know how to fix this !!!

Its beginning to look as though Ozisoft have a special, copy protection stripped, copy. If so the SF Patch will not work with it as it looks for the copy protection.
I can understand if they have as people do have problems with the SF Copy Protection.
I understand that Ozisoft will be putting up an amended 1.04 patch for their copy in the next few days (According to a reply given to an e-mail).
We know that there is a problem and Viper will try to get details from his SF Contact.
Hang on for a moment whilst we get any available details :)

A problem with patch not seeing copy protected cd and thus not work seems to make sence. Also it should be noted that my, and I assume all the others with this problem, have EU2 cd's that look like they are made at an Australian cd manufacturing plant (says www.pettaras.com.au)so they will be different from U.S copies most likely.

A real EU mystery eh?

Thank you Ugly Duck for this encouraging response. You have greatly improved my evening:)

Yep - hence Ozisofts pledge to upload a patch that will work!
We will crack the mystery....

I have Strategy First answer regarding the patch status:

Hello,

I just talked to our localization department and was told that we are currently waiting on an Australian version of the game to be sent to us, at which point we will begin work on a patch. A patch should be available for the Australian version of EU2 in 2 weeks. Clients will be able to find it at Ozisoft's website once it is completed.

I hope that helps you out.

Unfortunately, you will have to wait a little more.

That's great. I hope someone will post a link to the patch when it comes out - until then, I'll just play the original version.

For the record, I'd like to state I find the game pretty damned good, except for the historically realistic frustrations, and I bought it full price . The list of tweaks in the patch sound fascinating.

the web site is www.ozisoft.com

if I can find the patch when it's released, I will add the links to the sticky thread where all the other links are.

I checked the ozisoft site today. Not really big on showing where the patches are kept. A link to the relevant section would be appreciated.

BTW I should have known something was not kosher when I was able to run the game without the disk being in the machine.

Paradox is just lucky this is such a great game straight out of the box. :)

I'm sorry but I don't have anymore info :(

Let's wait one more week, and if it doesn't come out, I'll bug SF again.

Just remind me in one week please :D

P.S. I don't know either where is their patch section
