Howdy AARland.

A few weeks ago, @TheButterflyComposer and I started thinking about some sort of community project to mark the end of what has been an eventful 12 months here in our corner of the forum. At first we mooted some sort of good humoured roast among consenting friends (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open FiAAR, anyone?) but taking various things into account we eventually settled on something which we think has a bit more of a general appeal: a yearly review “publication”.

The immediate inspiration for this venture is the December 2013 Christmas special edition of the AARlander, which for those who don’t know was a community newspaper published variously under a handful of editors and under a few different names between 2004–2014. (Browse the AARchives here.) The idea here is to compile a one-off “issue” to cap off the year, sort of like an almanac that is by turns reflective and irreverent.

Following some informal canvassing, and an initial ideation session over google docs, we have an excellent cast of AARlanders who have expressed an interest in taking part by writing. The main body of the Review will be just that: a look back at what 2020 had in store for AARland, subforum by subforum. Around this, as circumstances permit, we will hopefully have a few festive skits and the like, as well as some words of wisdom from pillars of the community. With luck, in time for Christmas we’ll have ourselves a really good celebration of the year, and something that will hopefully complement nicely other seasonal initiatives going on around AARland at the moment.

In the interests of both propriety and theatre, I don’t intend for this thread to be where all the fine detail work of planning takes place. This, I think, is best done in private and on the google doc. That said, owing to the fact that coordinating groups beyond about 6 can be quite difficult on the forum, I propose this thread exist as a central reference point that everyone involved can use to check in and keep things coordinated. As an added bonus, putting this out there a) means that we’ve committed so we have to pull it off, and b) lets us (hopefully) build a bit of excitement for what should be a good bit of festive fun.

(Once the Review is up, this can probably turn into the comments thread, as we used to do with the AARlander.)

Just to start, I’ll list everyone who has indicated to either me or Butterfly that they would be interested in writing, or in some cases have already contributed something to the doc:
@Bullfilter @coz1 @diskoerekto @El Pip @JabberJock14 @mad orc @RossN @slothinator

If you all would be good enough to check in below just to say whether you’re still up to contribute, and what sort of thing you’d like to write (be it a game-based round-up or something more irreverent) that would be massively helpful. After that we can work stuff out in more detail behind the scenes. (This isn’t aimed so much at you, coz. You’re already well ahead of me :D) If you don’t have the google doc link and would like it, let me know and I’ll share it with you. (I won’t drop it here because that would give the whole game away.)

I should also note that this is not a closed shop and we absolutely welcome contributions of any scale from all comers.

All that remains to say, I think, is thanks for reading, and I hope that what we’re planning sounds fun. Any questions, either drop them below or get in touch by PM.

Greetings of the season to you all, and as is customary in these parts, happy reading!

DB

I know I roped most of you into this, but this is mostly Mr Blair up there's idea. I'm just along for the ride like everyone else for the most part.

So far I'm down for doing something on CK3's launch and current AAR scene (naturally) and possibly some character sketches, though this may well depend on what others, especially @Bullfilter does.

The Google doc has been shared with everyone who's responded positively to the call-out, but anyone who wants in need only put their name down here and contact either or both of us.

I think that's everything...alright then, let's get to work!

Happy to do something, but if anyone wants to point out a subject or niche that needs filling, I’d appreciate it, as I’m a blank for ideas at the moment.

I should also say that, hopefully with a bit of help from some friends, I’m down to do the Vicky roundup. Seeing as we’ve had quite an incredible year over there (if I do say so myself), there’s a goodly amount to talk about. Excellent revival of fortunes in progress.

though this may well depend on what others, especially @Bullfilter does.

There is one idea, @Bullfilter … I’ll PM you (both)

Perhaps a subforum review if you think there are any you would be happy writing about? EU4 and HOI (3&4) are still without writers, as is Stellaris and the other games (if we have any takers for any of the other games… Maybe one for @Nikolai ?)

EDIT: Oh, and CK2 also. Basically everything except CK3 and Vicky.

Yes, someone else should do ck2. I was super into it this year with writing and commenting, but haven't been since the summer. Ideally, @JabberJock14 could do something (view from the top etc etc).

I'm interested.

Considering doing an Imperator roundup. Shouldn't be that hard/long.

Ok, having seen that idea and responded in the PM, I would be willing to cover the ‘old’ HOIs (say 2 & 3) in my piece, if someone wanted to look at 4 separately, as an idea.

I was just about to respond to your PM so I’ll say here, this sounds fantastic and I can’t wait to see what you come up with. :D

I've written a bit of an overview of Victoria 2, highlighting a few AARs and why I think it is still alive and well after all these years. :)

Ah, lovely! Feel free to PM me text or drop onto the doc if you have the link. :)

I tried to start to write something a few times, but didn't know what to go with, I'm writing this to let you folks know I still have this in the back of my mind but don't have anything concrete yet

As we enter Christmas week, how are people getting on with pieces? Making any progress? I’m conscious I haven’t heard from some people for a little while, so figured I’d check in. :)

Ok. I'm thinking just running through CK3 history, problems with the board, hope for the future and some old fashioned paradox bashing.

And maybe a sketch.

Sounds ideal. On my end, I’m still planning on doing a little Vicky roundup to complement the one @RossN has already put together. (Thanks again for that, Ross.) I’ll probably focus more on the longer-running AARs that continue to push on, how Vicky is finding its feet as a home for latter-day longer projects etc etc

I’ll also put together a general introduction and I’ve got my future-facing article done, too.

Mine is there in concept, but still just a twinkle in the postman’s eye as yet. Did you have a submission deadline in mind?

It would be nice to pull everything together before the end of the year, but going into the Christmas period now this is probably optimistic. Really just as soon in the New Year as possible.
