I was wondering if anybody had any ideas on what factors go into the percentage of success and the cost of starting colonies and trading posts. Playing in the GC as Portugal, I noticed that some south african provinces have a very high percentage while nearby provinces have a much lower chance.

I know that a conquistador will raise the percentage and lower the cost, but are there any other ways that I can improve my chances and lower my costs?

Moving an army into the province will better the chance by 5% (I think).
Placing a Trading Post there will better it by 5% per level of the Post.
Killing all the natives will make it a lot easier, but I don't remember the percentage.

If possible, I would like to avoid killing the inhabitants, if they are not very agressive, as they will eventually become citizens when my colony grows to a city. In some cases it is unavoidable.

I had read that a trading post increases your chances for a colony. However, when the trading post was first created, I did not notice any increase in percentage. Later, after I had forgotten the original percentage, it did seem like the percentage had increased. I wonder if this increase only comes about over time?
