CK2 Dev Diary #112 - Wonderful News

Good afternoon

It has been a while since we wrote one of these and I am sure you are all dying to know what we have been working on, because of course, we have been working away on the next exciting thing. Our next update will be free and will focus on a brand new feature: Wonders.

Cathedrals, Fortresses, Pyramids and many many more wonders are planned for the next update. By investing a significant amount of gold and time you will be able to build a wondrous building. These will be built in stages meaning that even if you cannot finish it in your lifetime, your descendants will be able to finish what you started.

Wonders and their stages

Now even though many Cathedrals or Great Libraries may be built, we want to ensure they are not all the same, so it will be possible to add upgrades to your wonders, everything from spikes to gargoyles, to gardens, each of these giving unique modifiers and sometimes unlocks new content.

Upgrade Icons

We will also be adding some prebuilt historical wonders to the game, to represent already existing buildings, such as the Pyramids of Giza and the Colosseum of Rome. (Maybe you can even add an upgrade or two)

If you have fun ideas for any of this please let us know. I can’t promise it will get in, but it just might.

We hope you’re as excited about this as we are and please remember that all the art is work in progress.

Will they be in the province view?
Wonders will at least be accessible in the province view and we have some plans on making them visible and using them as a bit of visual candy in the province view to make the provinces that have wonders feel more special. Plans are just plans until they make it in though!

I want to build a great palace.
I've united Arabia, Cumania and Persia, and have tens of thousands of gold.
And my seat of power is something called Keep VI.
How lame is that?
I want something beautiful and extraordinary.
Can I have it?
Palaces are likely going in, some of these we might need to cut but currently we plan on having them.

Pyramids? Kemet expansion confirmed?

Also, Egyptian pyramids were actually white (not brownish) when they were constructed, the white limestone crumbled slowly away and was used for other construction projects over time.

If we can build pyramids, they should at least look historically accurate.

We're keeping this in mind :)

I really much hope not all wonders give some modifier bonuses but adding different types of gameplay features as well.
E.G.
  • Increasing the max province prosperity level to 4.
  • Adding another reformation slot.
  • Creating a location to pilgrimage. etc..

Adding canals is possible, however changing the map after the game has started is pretty difficult, so not sure we would do them justice.

Well, the "ancient Suez" was the less fascinating one anyway, bringing back to life deserted ruins is much more exciting. Thanks for your answer, I'm looking forward for this very interesting feature, hope these legendary deeds will be tied to special titles too.

We've been thinking about this but unsure what it will do, maybe unlock a special upgrade?

I'm not 100% sure, really. Possible ideas occur to me as:

  • Event to all members of that religion celebrating the accomplishment
  • Small boost to moral authority/large boost to piety
  • More events for pilgrimages to that site (including enabling pilgrimages to that site if you were not previously able to), I don't remember if non-christians can do pilgrimages though
I'm not sure I've got something really good and fitting though, so I'll keep thinking on it. I mostly had down the idea that it should be acknowledged. There's also the issue that if you do this, there should probably be special acknowledgement if the Pope controls a cathedral, or any of his corollaries.

What will the format of the wonder be in the UI? It'll have it's own UI space I assume, like how forts are not buildings in the regular build menu?

How about being able to spend a huge amount of grace to get the Chinese emperor to send an engineer who will help you construct a special Chinese looking wonder?

Will Jerusalem, Mecca, Rome and such as sites become "wonders" and receive events (and income) related to pilgrimage? At least potentially!
It could also be used for Holy Sites and religion authority too.

3000 BC is not currently planned.
Too busy working on Vicky 3 to plan the 3000 BC start date? Don't worry, you don't have to confirm :D

Hey, if we're talking about new buildings and upgrades, can we PLEASE have some upgrades to our current Forts? During the viking raids they were built to actually protect the wealth of the counties from raiders, but in-game they do virtually nothing to protect wealth since most of it is still unprotected. Upgrading Forts to protect all of the wealth of a county would be a huge benefit for anyone ruling along the English channel.

I'll give you an example of one upgrade bonus:
Sacrificial Altar: Gives you an extra option when sacrificing characters.

We're not reworking holdings, the wonders will exist in their own space and each province will have space for one wonder.
Curious how that will work with Constantinople, though, since you have the Hagia Sophia... and there has been talk about having the Theodosian Walls as another 'wonder' as well.
