CK2 Dev Diary #12: The Maim event

Hello all, it’s time for another DD about ZombieInvasion <Secret DLC*>! Today we’ll take a look at what we’ve done to the Maimed trait. Well, we’ve removed it! People without <Secret DLC> can still be Maimed, of course, but the lucky owners of <Secret DLC> will instead receive more specific injuries, such as: One-handed, One-legged, One-Eyed, Disfigured, or Mangled (this represents severe trauma to the torso, mostly). As well as allowing more specific wounds and flavor, this has allowed us to remove the Health penalty from most of these traits (Mangled still has one though). Instead, when you receive a maiming-type injury you will also receive the Severely Injured trait, which has some health and stat penalties, but will be lost after some time has passed. Afterall, while losing a hand is certainly not an enjoyable process, you do eventually heal up and can be perfectly healthy besides the missing appendage. Also, if anyone is feeling creative, please suggest interesting effects for these new traits - we do of course have some penalties on them, but I worry they are a little dull, so fire away and I may shamelessly steal your ideas.

Since both One-eyed and Disfigured affect the faces of characters, we have added a lot of new portrait props to reflect this. Here is a small sample of what you might see ingame:

We have also added several events relating to life with missing body parts:

a disfigured ruler holds a masquerade ball

the loss of a hand is a severe blow to a famous warrior

That’s all for now, next week I am not certain which DD we will show, either I will talk about some extra Pagan features we’ve added, or Doomdark will give you some of his thoughts about CK2. It will be a surprize!

*= DLC contains no zombies

To clarify: it's not that we're against the idea, it's just at this time it's not in the game.
But you made me cry

I am really excited for this kind of DLC. Something that adds more to the role playing aspect. I find it hard to role play in this game however not because it does a bad job but because I have this built in thought process of picking the best trait right away. Anyway thank you guys for making this DLC and I am really happy you are making the Black Death more deadly as well as these new events :D

First time posting. So far super excited about what's been revealed. About being maimed should be an event where after being injured you have a chance to develop gangrene, which leads to the amputation of an effected appendage, hand, arm, foot, leg, or even lead to death.

Being tortured in example the rack could lead to something like being in chronic pain which leads to wroth, or arbitrary.

Or if you catch your steward stealing you can chop off the thief's hand.

Facial deformities, could negatively impact diplomacy, stewardship, and martial, but carry positives to intrigue, stewardship, and learning.

Possibly cut out someone's tongue?

Why would facial deformities make you better in intrigue, stewardship and learning?

Again people are attaching positive traits to negative maiming results. How will you be better with money and learning if something happened to your face? Also intrigue? Will you blend more easily into a crowd with a deformed face?

I think the idea is you're wearing a mask so people don't know who you are? Of course, if you're the only one wearing a mask it's gonna be a bit of a giveaway.

MANDATORY MASKS FOR EVERYONE!

Also, if you lose an eye an are a mystic there should be a chance of you finding a weird rock you decide to make an eye out of and this may or may not give you the ability to see the future giving you a small boost in... I dunno? Intrigue? Stewardship? Heck, why not all of them. A small +1 boost to everyone because you have a magical eye.

Facial maiming would most likely not boost anything and I don't think people generally want to see the maimed traits having any innate benefits. However, modifiers could be added through later events where your character learns to compensate for the damage to mitigate the lost stats or learns to focus their energy in other ways to make up for their reduced skills thanks to the damage (warrior without a hand turning to rulership or learning instead of combat).

Can jousting accidents cause some King Henry VIII shit to your character? That would be another great thing to add in, imo.

Nicknames PLEASE! One Eye, Half Hand, the Ugly, No Legs etc. maybe some ironic like the Eagle Eyed

Maybe a Germanic religion character could have the Odin-Eye. They would need to have eye-maim plus be just/genius or quick. Something like that.

An idea could be to add some events that go along with phantom limb syndrome, such as "I awoke and reached for a glass of water to my side only to remember that my hand was removed in battle" and then there could be some sort of trait or a modifier that corresponds with that event. Another idea could be that you could have a event to remove your mask to show you're mangled face to your lover or spouse. This could have several outcomes, some of which have your significant other fleeing in fear, or them accepting you and the two characters growing closer together.

I'm pretty sure they added the masks to not show such ugliness to the players! :D And I'm not sure... how hard would a deformed face be in the current portrait system?

Not that hard, but it'd go deeper into Uncanny Valley region than current portraits do. Also, after a while you'd get bored of the same face deformities, masks can be used for both leprosy and an axe to the face!

See above link for details. Going to your grave with a missing body part meant for a lot of different cultures that you ended up in the afterlife or at the Second Coming without it. Pretty terrible to be resurrected forever with a missing hand. Does not apply with destroyed parts although maybe a prosthesis is meant to substitute in case of the Rapture?

If characters lose limbs, I would love to see events to retrieve the part, either for the character or his heir (assuming his heir gives half a damn.) And if they're a lunatic, maybe they keep it in a jar or dried out in a bag on their person.

And if King So-and-so is particularly pious, I hope his missing bits become holy relics. And if the family should come back into possession of King So-and-so's Most Holy Hand, do they do the honorable thing and bury it with him, or keep it as a relic? What effect would either of these choices have on dynastic opinion or stats? What does the Pope think if the family cuts Uncle Harry into bits and markets him as holy relics to the adoring public, and how much money do you get for such a crass action?

Might be fun. :)
