CK2 - Dev Diary #123 - Iron Century

Hello!

As you probably know by now we released our 3.1.1 patch yesterday. Hopefully those of you who have managed to try it are enjoying it, and those of you who haven’t will jump in this weekend. Let us know what you think about the court and tech changes, and as always if you run into any issues, please report them in the bug forum!

Now onto something new, there have been a few hints here and there about what we have been working on. However now we can officially announce that we will be releasing a new historical bookmark called: The Iron Century. The bookmark will start on the 7th of August 936, a previously unplayable date and our first in the 10th century.

In Europe Otto marches on the path to an Empire, Rival Caliphs battle for control of the Muslim world and the last remnants of the vikings stir to the north. Hundreds of other characters have their own stories to tell. A thousand possibilities await in the Iron Century.

Next week we will do something special and have a new dev diary about the 936 bookmark every day from Monday to Friday to cover the setting of the medieval world in the 10th century. Also I want to make it clear that ‘The Iron Century’ update will be completely free.

A correction from last weeks dev diary is that the correct weekday of our Crusader Kings stream is Wednesdays 16:00 CEST and not the previously mentioned Thursdays.

Thanks for reading everyone!

I am not sure which one could be considered as the "Chinese Emperor". I prefer that the off-map power should be unavailable since East Asia was just a region with several independent countries in 936, just like Europe.
I'd have said the closest one to Tibet, but even that doesn't seem easy. They could treat this as a civil war or government crisis. Just put China into isolation. Or maybe even have a special event for it.

The issue is that in vanilla they seem to require a character holding a title at all times. So there is the workaround of having Iceland as a Catholic theocracy. The Games of Thrones mod has a nice solution to that by having pseudo-character placeholder instead that doesn't do anything. Kind of an immortal faceless entity instead of a person

I hope the offmap will be present. It's my favorite feature of CK2.I will be extremely disappointed if it's not present at this start date.

Thank you very much for all those free updates but... No big expansion on sight? I still worry development will stop soon... :(
Even though it's support is inevitably coming to an end but I don't think they are done with CK2 yet.
I am not a marketing or finance student but I don't think they have a reason to not announce that they are done with major expansions in advance.
It is a single player game and not like an MMO where people play because they continuously expect it to expand and without expansions the servers will go dry and they will start loosing money.
In CK2 rather it will give more people incentive to buy all the existing DLCs to have the complete collection or at least buy more.It won't kill the playerbase at all and even more so with free updates and mods.

So I believe if they are done with expansions they will let us know officially and otherwise there is no reason to believe that.
For now let's enjoy the free goodies!!

Based on previous PDS titles,i think we will know that when an eventual CK3 will be released.Remember that the last Vicky 2 patch has been released in 2015.And there is still no Vicky 3,and for this game, they have also not stated 'This is the final patch'.So i think CK2 will follow the same thing.

They did research where they could, but there aren't detailed records for a lot of the areas. Or what records exist are mixed with mythology. So even doing the best they can there need to be some creative inventions and extrapolations

Yes, I'm calling it not researched because it's impossible to research as well as later dates. With creative inventions and extrapolations it's hard to get something as cool as historical thing. They couldn't add Hasting-level setups to places we know nothing about.

The irish iceland isnt actually just some workaround, irish monks actually did stablish themselves in iceland and wrote about it, but when norse settlers started to arrive most of the irish monks decided to leave so as to not mingle with the potentially dangerous pagans.

-Devs: "Here's a new bookmark, and it's completely free! Here's also an awesome picture of a King in armor, carrying a sword, leading his men into battle."
-Player: "I dunno...."
-Devs: "Here's the same picture....but with the King flailing his arm like a propeller!"
-Player: "gimme! gimme! gimme!"

Making the propeller gif has been Divines main duty for the past 2 months or so.

So... Byzantium.

The year this bookmark represents had Romanos I Lekapenos and Constantine VII as co-emperors. Which one will hold the title in game? Technically Lekapenos was the senior historically, but Constantine is a pretty important emperor, and it'd be a shame to be unable to play as him. (Then again, IIRC, it's pretty hard to actually get the throne as Irene of Athens the way she did in the Charlie bookmark, so...)

"Co-rulers" are one of the things on my wishlist of features. Karlings and ERE did it for a while to try and tie the eldest son down to the title, before primogeniture was taken as a given. There's no real way to replicate this ingame.
