CK2 - Dev Diary #123 - Iron Century

Hello!

As you probably know by now we released our 3.1.1 patch yesterday. Hopefully those of you who have managed to try it are enjoying it, and those of you who haven’t will jump in this weekend. Let us know what you think about the court and tech changes, and as always if you run into any issues, please report them in the bug forum!

Now onto something new, there have been a few hints here and there about what we have been working on. However now we can officially announce that we will be releasing a new historical bookmark called: The Iron Century. The bookmark will start on the 7th of August 936, a previously unplayable date and our first in the 10th century.

In Europe Otto marches on the path to an Empire, Rival Caliphs battle for control of the Muslim world and the last remnants of the vikings stir to the north. Hundreds of other characters have their own stories to tell. A thousand possibilities await in the Iron Century.

Next week we will do something special and have a new dev diary about the 936 bookmark every day from Monday to Friday to cover the setting of the medieval world in the 10th century. Also I want to make it clear that ‘The Iron Century’ update will be completely free.

A correction from last weeks dev diary is that the correct weekday of our Crusader Kings stream is Wednesdays 16:00 CEST and not the previously mentioned Thursdays.

Thanks for reading everyone!

Reactions:
PLEASE add content to the Islamic World. It is so unbelievably boring to have titanic Empires in the game (ie. the Abbasids and Fatimids), they should play VERY differently from Feudal Europe, and actually a lot more akin to the Byzantine rump state (in that they led states with bureaucracies and standing armies). There is SO much content that can be added for the Shi'ite Fatimids, that doesn't involve bizarre events like "secretly reading the Shi'ite Qur'an" -_-

The titanic struggle between the Fatimids and Abbasids, and then the Buyids should feel exactly as so. Also, where are my slave soldiers and competing legal schools?

Also hoping for something good regarding the rise of the Ghuzz Turks and specifically the Seljuk clan.

Who on earth is clicking the disagree button on this? It's an entirely correct post, the Islamic world is portrayed in a very underdone and stereotypical fashion that's hardly been altered since Sword of Islam's initial release. It really, really needs some love, far more so than the pagans who Paradox seems to delight in lavishing attention on.

No achievements this time. Hopefully we can add some to cover wonders and the start date in the future.
My only request is that when you do get around to adding achievements, please give me my golden survival achievement to match the set!

I am looking forward to them adding one for Iron Century as well.
Already speculating on some proposed achievement names.
  • Iron Centurion
  • Iron Centuries
  • Five Centuries

The early tenth century was such a tumultuous time period for the world, the Byzantine war machine was gearing up for reconquest, the Persians were sadly being destroyed in blood mills, the last of the pagans were still kicking in several countries up north, crusades were still not a thing yet, and Turkmenistan region was charging their old Turkic lasers. I look forward to this new bookmark with much anticipation, however I must dare ask when will Imperator:Rome get their other start dates? There's over 600 years of playable start dates in CK2 and only 1 day of start date in Imperator. I understand its a brand new game, but I'll still be playing Crusader Kings 2 for many years to come in the future because Imperator lacks all the proverbial bells and whistles that makes CK2 so full and immersive.

936?
Who is going to be the Emperor of China in 936?
936 is the time Shi Jingtang of Later Jin overthrow (more like: usurp) the Later Tang under Khitan help.
Which means it can be quite difficult to get the balance of the Khitans, the Later Jin and Later Tang (if they are still alive) right. At least, the current OP China is certainly not the case in 936.

1) Will there be 64-bit update? I desperatly want more people could play this beautiful game.
2) Please, tell us there will be new achievements. This date and wonders are essential for them! ;)
Tuscany already answered number 2, but regarding 64-bit; we are still looking into it but have no definitive answer on whether we can make it or not.
The age and all the things that's been added since the game was first released means that there are a lot of things to update and more potential issues we need to handle.
We will update you guys when we have some news on the subject :)

NOT a fan of this one.... We nee new Bookmarks for sure - in EARLIER periods to give us longer games.....
I actually think a 10th century start date like this one is quite welcome.

We don't need longer games (who even plays a complete game, even from the 1066 start date?). We need one where Catholicism doesn't completely collapse (jury's still out on this one, but not having a giant event stack in the process of conquering various tiny Anglo-Saxon states or having them overwhelmed by heretic rebels because they are too small to muster an army to stop them should help), but at the same time, the various other religions are strong enough not to be the pushovers they tend to be in 1066.

Part of me suspects they may be trying it at least in part as a test for a possible CK3 start date choice (since it would allow Norse pagans to be a thing in vanilla CK3 without). The other (more optimistic, perhaps) part of me suspects it's market research to see if there is any demand for other new start dates. Either way, I look forward to giving Otto a spin.

No. I like this start date. It's an interesting start and has been needed for a while.

I also agree I would like to see a 632 start date or something pre-islamic but that is more full expansion pack thing.

This doesn't need any new features. That's why it's free. Earlier start date will need things like culture/religions for north africa, pagan religion for arabia, maybe a new government type, events for Islam, events/decisions and content for Monothelite, etc.

Dunno if somebody asked already, but are we going to see any new bloodlines associated with this start date? Otto I is a good candidate for one, but having the blood of Eric Bloodaxe sounds poetic almost, even if he's just been deposed in Norway, and not Northumbrian material yet.

Will this be free update or tied to an expansion like The Old Gods or Charlemagne? Also is this right around the corner or is this months away?

A couple, yes. It will be talked about in one of the DDs next week.
