CK2 Dev Diary# 23: More rules, less lunatics

Hello all, it’s time for a CK2 DD once again. Now before I get into the meat of this one, I want to let you know that DDs between DLCs are going to be shorter than the big feature-explainers I could write during Reaper’s, so don’t be surprised if some are brief.

Moving on, work on 2.6.2 continues well, and I’ll post the patch notes when it’s closer to being done, but some fixes that may interest people include:
  • AI Characters are much less likely to take Experimental treatments for minor illnesses, which means you should see less maimed or insane character about in the world.
  • Patricians can now properly Go into Seclusion and Search for Court Physicians.
  • Characters under 16 no longer get gout.

We have added more Game Rules:
  • Supernatural events can be set to Unrestricted, allowing the AI to have fun with them too.
  • Both Mongol and Aztec invasions can be set to “Delayed Random” where they will show up at random but not before the year 1000 and not before the game has been played for 50 years.
  • Turkic Conquerors can be set to Historical/Random/Off.
  • Way of Life users can set Dueling to Normal/Restricted/Unrestricted.
  • Both Vassal and Demesne limits can be set to Normal/Unlimited/50%/25%
  • Grant Independence can be set to Normal/Unrestricted.
  • Assassinate plots in MP can be set to Normal/No Players/No Players + Heirs/No Player Dynasty.

We have also continued to add more Content, including:

The various Defensive Pagan faiths now allow you to pick a Patron Deity granting a bonus to certain stats, and allowing access to certain new events:

Plus, all Pagan religion now have their own Valhalla-bound equivalent:

Characters in Seclusion may find they have an uninvited guest:

Immortal characters are now a lot more likely to wake up from Incapacitating head wounds, and there is no longer an age limit on said event for Immortals.
Even non-depressed Immortals who find that life Eternal isn’t all that great may now attempt to end their life.
Not only that, it’s also possible that Immortal characters may find they are not the only people to have found Eternal life, and that their brethren are not the most welcoming types:

say one thing for Rurik Rurikid, say he's lucky

And that's it for now, see you next week!

And you'd be wrong:
Doesn't the third option restrict achievements btw? Never played with it, since I do prefer some drift to happen eventually.

Not according to the dev diary, though I like you have not played with it. I think the shorter time for drift DOES disable achievements, but not turning it off.
There is no rule for shorter drift. Restricted slows it to 300 years and to titles adjacent to your de jure land. So Bourbon will drift into France, but not Toulouse or Gascogne.

It's a different rule, but you're wrong (see patch notes):
De Jure Assimilation Duration: Very Short/Short/Default/Long

Gah, forgot about that. Anyway, I use the Long one only, so kinda missed those.

Good feedback. Various typos have been fixed. At this point we can't add any more gamerules or content to 2.6.2, but I've noted down several suggestions I liked for next time.

I forgot to quote the messages as I read them, but:
I don't see how you could gain scurvy without being on a ship, so a reproducible case of getting that would be good.
It's WAD that not all mystics are immortal, some know the secrets without wanting eternal life.

Scurvy was very common in long sieges, due to the practice of getting for supplies food that doesn't rot quickly, most of wich lack of vitamine c. Even a french king died of scurvy during a long siege, if i recall correctly. In fact due to scurvy being common in this massive congregation of people, they believed that it was an infectious disease.

Why is Romuva priest called shaman? I also noticed that Slavic priests are called shamans as well. Shouldn't they be volkhvs?

Maybe? Volkhvs isn't really an English word, or even pronouncable in English, so I guess it depends (1) on where you stand on un-translated names and (2) on whether that's any more appropriate for Slavic/Romuva outside of Rus. Shaman is still descriptive of their place in society regardless of your stance on those things.

@Darkrenown,

will there be a new Gamerules and new in-game Laws allowing fuller and better representation of Imperial Administrations?

Perhaps in the future, there could even be a special Imperial Government form for Byzantium that can degrade into Feudalism as the Imperial Bureauracracy weakens and becomes corrupt? With local Themes being populated by the levies provided by buildings instead of the count/duchy based levy system we have now?

But Norse priest is called godi. And in gemefiles those two abovementioned are called volhv. So this is clearly a bug, which I reported. Besides, this update is aiming for more flavor when it comes to defensive pagans, and giving their priests a discriptive name takes away some of that flavor.

Basileus isn't an English word, either.

Anyways, despite there being many different names for pagan priests in Slavic countries, volkhv (pronounced /volxv/) is a good choice in my opinion. Slavs currently have bigger problems, though, like modern ethnicities in 769 and random cultures in Rus' in 769.

EDIT: Baltic priests should be krivis in the singular by the way. On that note, Romuva and Suomenusko aren't English words, either, yet they're used alongside English words such as Germanic, Slavic, West African.

He needs a mongol court, so no.
Does that mean Timur WILL spawn if there is a generic mongol horde (not the GK one) in the steppe?

Looks like it has to be in Persia. So if there's a generic Mongol horde with a province in Persia he will spawn.
Too bad.

Actually, origins in other languages aside, basileus is in English dictionaries: http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/basileus

I honestly fight some of the more flavorful words more distracting than they're worth, particularly in the minor titles (oh, what's my Court Chaplain called in this particular region again?) But yes, the choices are inconsistent.

For a game whose mechanics rely heavily on religion I think it'd best to have the unique names.

Loan words often are in dictionaries, but do not actually belong to the borrowing language.

On topic, I honestly wish there were actually unique mechanics to go with flavor names - like how muslim court chaplains have giving charity in place of improving opinion of religious figures.
