CK2 Dev Diary #25: Man vs Machine

What’s this, a dev diary on a Monday?! Yes, it’s true, we’ve moved them to Mondays so they’ll coincide with CK2 streams. The Reaper’s Due has been out for a while now, and I am very pleased with how both it and the free update were received (I wasn’t sure the focus on Death would be so universally appreciated!) As Game Director, I rarely have time to do much coding and scripting anymore, but I did help out with the optimizations and several of the Game Rules. The game is in safe hands though; the current CK2-team has done an amazing job so far!

Work has now commenced on the next expansion and I can already reveal it’s going to be something a bit similar to Way of Life, which I believe I actually mentioned in my previous dev diary. I also promised optimizations, AI improvements and quality of life stuff. Well, the optimizations are done for now, so the next major free update will feature AI and GUI improvements, which brings me to today’s topic; usability.

Now, we are aiming to tweak several interfaces and while I cannot go into much detail yet, I can say that I’d especially like to address the following main areas:
  • Plotting (quality of life)
  • Prisoner management
  • Guardian vs Educator (clarity)
  • More space for Traits and Character Modifiers
There are other things in the works too, but when you’ve worked on a game for so many years you tend to get blind to many usability issues and simply accept them as they are. That is why I’d like to hear from you, our faithful fans, what you find most annoying and clunky about the CK2 interfaces. Are there any actions you find hard to do, or useful information you cannot easily find (or not at all)? All feedback is welcome!

That is all for now; the floor is yours...

New Feature: Alarm Reminder!
I wish I could manually set a timer (multiple timers and repeat features would be more appreciated) with a small side note to remind me things.
E.g: 01/01/1044 "Dont forget to change the law"
+1 this. And maybe an opportunity to flag children for critical ages when they can be appointed a guardian etc.

Please improve the intra-faction mechanism. I am the vassal that held half of the Byzantine Empire and practically can just send the Basileus run tail between legs but I came voiceless in factions led by some one-county strategos. I should have been the decision maker.
Maybe allow multiple versions of the same faction to exist, if a potential faction member dislikes another by a sufficient amount, or vice versa. (Adding an "insult" diplo action to go along with this would be handy.) Or have a plot to seize leadership of a faction you are in, and the only people you can invite to the plot are the other faction members?

What I would like to see in the next update are universities, get rid of the building in Cities and instead make it similar to Hospitals. However, make it so that no every province can have an university. Rather, unlocking the university slot is tied to rare events so that there are no more than, say, 10 universities in Europe. Then the universities could be properly upgraded, financed and garnished with events.

As for Hospitals themselves, I don't think they need to be separate holdings. They don't seem to be significant enough to warrant that. Instead, make them buildings in Cities and/or Church Land.

We've been given option to customize the game rules to some degree. Would it be remotely possible to customize the map itself? How about the option to turn off India and Sub-Saharan Africa, if I don't want to bother with them?

This thread is blowing up quick. We’ve got interface opinions and that’s for sure.

I’d like to see a mechanism added for detecting when saves are being loaded across save-incompatible patches, and the UI to tell the user so. It’s crazy that after all these years, you can still destroy your Ironman saves, with dozens of hours put into them, simply by not noticing that Steam downloaded stuff and the version number got bigger in the launcher and on the main menu.

And while I’m at it, a minor suggestion—the Continue buttons in the launcher and the main menu should have some indication of which "save games/" folder they’ll be pulling from. It’s great that it wants to load autosave.ck2, but what if I have 10 of those in different mod subfolders?

A few things I've wanted:
  • A way to filter out out-of-range characters in the character finder. Maybe even on by default.
  • Notifications for pressable weak claims, similar to the existing notifications for pressable de-jure claims. Also, a good way to see all the claims my vassals / courtiers / relatives have, and whether they're currently pressable.
  • Related to the above, the "find claimaints" screen really ought to distinguish strong from weak, and for weak claims there should be a quick way to see if they're currently pressable.
  • A "religion of ruler" map mode! This would be really nice for figuring out who you can holy war, and who might come to their aid when you do. The current religion map mode sort of tries to convey this information with the dashed lines when the ruler differs from the peasants, but it's not very convenient. (Maybe there's a mod for this, I didn't see one when I looked but I admit I didn't look too hard.)
  • Related to the above, it would be nice to sort characters in character finder by their lieges's religion, too. For instance when looking for concubines this is usually the relevant factor rather than the prospective concubine's own religion.
  • Some way to see the number of provinces in your realm. Admittedly this is something that rarely matters in vanilla, but CK2+ uses it as a requirement for things. (I would not be shocked to discover I'm an idiot and this is hidden somewhere already, though.)

As a role-play enthusiast, having my character's opinion of another and what modifies that visible in the character finder window would be pretty nice.

More options when interacting with imprisoned children would be nice too, such as using them in bargaining for peace.

I'm probably repeating myself but could there be a chance of naval combat in certain situations? It doesn't have to be similar to EU4 or land combat, maybe via events when two very large navies with armies frequent the same sea section and they clash, with results depending on the military skills of the traveling armies' commanders?

When I'm shopping for mercenaries, there are often several options within my price range that could work for me and I have to decide based on three things: 1) troop composition, which I can already see; 2) upkeep, which I can already see; and 3) the captain's ability, which I cannot see. Every time I click on the captain's portrait to check his martial skill and combat modifiers, then I have to go back and scroll back to the others and check them out individually, rinse and repeat. It would be helpful if you'd just give me that info on the Mercenary tab already.

HI, my first post, i think it should be interesting:
1) when my troops moves for war, character owner of lands in which troops pass should have at least no bad opinion of my character to permit foreign troops to go on its field or must be rewarded with money or can attack my troops ( if he want), while are in its county/duke/ realm
2)it is possible to have an option to try to assassinate at same time all members of a family or the whole council? Of course should be not easy to fully realize this kind of plot ( and should cost a lot in money) and extremely risk in consequences ( for example: it can happens someone dies but someone is safe and become your most important danger having more % then other to kill you; high risk of revolt if some victim is noble and/or member of council and so on), but could be an interesting option to use when arrive hard times;
3) If you discover a noble of another realm that is trying to kill you or a member of your restricted family ( wife, children), this should give you a CB to make war if he refuse to end plot, CB only for prestige or money, not to gain land.
Of course, also the IA should have same possibilities.
4) in my experience a couple of times I was in these conditions: I was character A, character B want kill me but if I die I continue to play as character B wthout loose nothing ( often this happens when character A is a child, so, on contrary, i have all to gain as player if character A dies). I think in this situation should be a strong penalty for me if character A dies, to motivate player to not "suicide" myself

I hope i explain in right way my thought and that these can be considered not bad ideas, thanks for attention, sorry for my bad English

Maybe more 'poor people' mercs? There aren't a lot of characters that can afford the real expensive mercs so there is little point for them.

The handing out of titles could be looked into: when CK2 started, the limited CB available for christians made it so that there usually was only a few titles to hand around, and the diplo action was nice.
Now with the many type of crusades/invasions and different government forms (nomads), there are situation where you have dozens of holdings, and finding that 2 holdings chiefdom in Cumania becomes a nightmare ( My Mongol game had me spending more time distributing land to other khans than doing actual invasions).

I think the HOI4 UI for peace conference would work well, with some adaptations:
Your holdings in the leftside bar ( with de jure hierarchy) / The map, allowing you to click on a holding / Your vassals on the right side + the "search a courtier" function.

We need a quick and easy way to hand out viceroyalties and other titles. Like No Hassles Vassals.

Hm not really important stuff but I always wished culture conversion would be a bit better. Like let's say you are the greek Byz emperor, you reconquer Armenia from muslims, and you roleplay and want to resettle them with armenians so you appoint armenian counts (hey they are your culture group after all). Then you wait and wait and wait and those provinces will never flip back to armenian because you, the top level liege are greek.....

I agree. Tribals at least have the ability to build settlements to spread culture, but other than that there's really no active mechanic to increase culture for other government forms. In fact I was thinking about this last night while I was playing and hit upon an idea. What about an option for feudal governments to enact jus primae noctis in territories? The idea of course would be to breed out the foreign culture ala BRAVEHEART (yes, I know there is very little evidence to suggest that this law was ever actually practiced, but this is CK2 where lots of ahistorical things happen). The way this would affect the game is culture conversion rate controlled by a lord of your own culture would accelerate in exchange of a tradeoff of increased rebellion risk. Also, it could result in occasional unexpected claimants to a title when the son of the lowly peasant woman the feudal lord manage to knock up on her "first night" comes of age.

I didn't make it through all the posts so I'm sorry if this has already been mentioned.

When starting out as a character in iron man who gets randomized stats and education, I will generally only play the save if the education is from the branch that I want (i.e. starting as a pagan OPM I want a martial education to start). I don't care if it's Tier I or Tier IV as I can improve it with focus and events, but having to reload the game from desktop each time to maintain the checksum makes it a hassle to just start a potential save. The character editor does not work with iron man and also doesn't keep the original dynasty of the character if I'm trying to play as a historic dynasty/character.

I hate the handing out land to vassals, especially if I conquered much land, like in a holy war.
It would be awesome if I could just create a new vassal on county-tier holdings like I can with barony-tier holdings instead of inviting massive amounts of courtiers via the descision screen and hand every county to every single character.

I mean, if I for example are feudal and there are two castle holdings in a province, I can just create a new vassal for the lesser castle and give the province to him, why not let me directly give the province to a randomly created vassal?

Also: Prisoner management. Sometimes it can be pretty annoying to handle all of my prisoners if I forgot about my prison for a while, or captured many at once.
It would be nice if I could select multiple prisoners and give an order to them at once.
Like selecting all I want to execute, then press execute.

And, I know it's a little off-topic, but it's quality of life as well.
Children of courtiers.

I am set to be their educater by default. So if my court has many children, this popup where I can choose to give them traits by giving myself a debuff pops up quite often. It would be nice if the childs parents would be the default educator, so that I don't have to make every descision for every child in my court.

Would it be possible to copy the EU4 battle indicator? (I'm referring to the icon that shows up on the map to inform you what date combat will start when moving your troops.)

The only interface improvement I can think of right now has already been mentioned, and that would be to streamline troop management. Having an easy way to split off vassal troops and mercs from your main army would be great.

In terms of the UI, the one major change I'd make would be to put the character finder back somewhere more obvious, because it is one of the central tools to play the game with, but at the moment is still really hidden with a tiny button right in the bottom right of the screen. It should be far more prominent.
