CK2 Dev Diary #95: Amending Africa

Greetings!

We’ve shown you plenty of map changes already, including updates to Russia, Scandinavia, and most recently Italy and the Alps. But surely, we couldn’t do all of these wonderful updates without looking at the continent that deserves it the most, right?

So let’s have a look at Africa.

You read that right. Africa is finally getting the love and attention it deserves! Northern Africa and Mali have long needed an update. Where counties resembled squares and rectangles more than anything else. But no more!

Let’s start with the northern kingdoms. The kingdoms themselves remain the same. Only Mauretania has been renamed to Maghreb, and has along with the kingdom of Africa been placed in the Empire of Maghreb. Mainly to break down the very large Arabian Empire slightly. On the county level, every single county has been repainted in order to place them where they should be and give the borders a much more natural feeling.

All in all, the new provinces and additional holding slots will make North Africa stronger than before. But to offer additional protection against aggressive Holy Wars from the major powers of Europe, we’ve increased the number of sea zones slightly in the mediterranean. The stronger realms of central Europe will now have to first conquer their way down to the coast of Iberia, Southern Italy, or go through Mallorca or Sardinia, before they will be able to reach the shores of Africa. This should give the realms in Africa some time before the Europeans attempt to make their way onto the continent.

As for Mali. The area has about twice the number of provinces compared to what they had before. This in turn allows for more than just the lonely kingdom of Mali to exist, which has been split into the three kingdoms of Ghana, Mali and Songhay. One kingdom for each of the major powers that inhabited the area during the timeframe of the game. They’ll all still be part of the empire of Mali, which is finally no longer the only empire with a single De Jure kingdom.

Here is an overview of the De Jure kingdoms:

Updating the existing parts of the map is not the only thing we’ve done for Africa however. Kanem-Bornu and the region around lake Chad is now on the map as well! The area consists of the two kingdoms Hausaland and Kanem. These consist of three and four duchies respectively and together form the empire of Kanem-Bornu. So not only do we get new rulers and titles to play with, but it allows both east and west to move across the continent without always having to expand north and, usually, through a Muslim blob that more often than not forms in Northern Africa and Arabia. Instead, you’ll be able to cross Africa through Ghana/Mali in the west, through the Sahara and the Fezzan corridor in the center, and finally through Wadai and Abyssinia in the east.

Let’s not stop there though.

To make Africa more distinct from other regions, a second trade route has been added to the game; the Trans-Saharan Trade Route.

06_trade_route.png

It requires either Horse Lords or Jade Dragon to be unlocked and functions very much like the updated Silk Road from 2.8. There is however, a certain twist to it. The base value of the trade route is very low. Granting next to no bonuses to the counties it passes through. What you need to do in order to benefit from it, is to control certain locations along the trade route and construct unique production buildings in established trade posts. To be clear though, these are merely special buildings within the trade posts just like you would upgrade a trade post on the Silk Road. These buildings represent some of the trade goods that historically had a large impact on the trade in the region. The most important of these will be the Gold Mines.

08_gold_mine.png

There are two Gold Mines located on the map, both of them in the kingdom of Mali. The Gold Mines will allow Mali to amass great wealth. Just like they did historically. If you would prefer to do it differently and take the mines from them, conquering Africa will very much be worth the effort. Not only will Gold Mines greatly increase the value of the Trans-Saharan trade, it will also grant the owner a large bonus to the county’s income. There will also be some flavour events that can trigger for anyone owning them.

Remember that what I’ve shown here is still a work in progress and things may be subject to change. Now, let’s wrap up the dev diary with some smaller additions.

We’ve renamed the West African religion to simply “African”, as to not exclude the newly added region around lake Chad, and updated the Patron Deities accordingly. The religion will also get a new set of shields for displaying the CoAs on the map.

I hope that you look forward to these changes and the overall improvements for Africa!

I wholeheartedly agree with your suggestion of Ireland being at least level with Scotland in terms of the number of provinces as I feel that the country has been underrepresented. However, in relation to the title of an Irish-cultured King of Ireland, should it not be "Ard-Rí" or something along those lines ? Certain cultures get unique names for king/emperor titles, and imo Ireland should be no exception- especially seeing as the country's name changes to Éire when controlled by an Irish character. This has always been a pet peeve of mine haha.

.. perhaps some minor flavour events could be added e.g. in the earlier start the option for Irish/Scottish rulers to go on a pilgrimage to Íona, or an event during the Viking age depicting the looting and/or closure of that particular monastery. Just a thought;)

Ard Rí would be cool, but I think using a different language title might be too much, since High King is a direct translation. It's like the way French and German cultured characters use the King title, as opposed to Roi or König.

Since Egyptian culture was Split up into Coptic (probalby byzantine culture Group) and Egyptian (arab culture Group)

Has this been confirmed? If so, what marvellous news - I've been grumbling about the name lists of 'Egyptian' culture for ever and this will hopefully put the matter to rights!

Damn, that's a lot of new Empires.

Indeed. It actually has begun to bug me a bit how the empires seem to proliferate - soon everybody and their guinea-pig can be an emperor. In the image this is perhaps best demonstrated by the fact that the de-jure area of Russian Empire is now much smaller than the size of the Muscovite realm when it in reality emerged as an empire...

This is not meant as a complaint as such, but I personally am missing the humongous Arabian Empire and the single vast Tartaria, too.

Ufff, nice!

Africa was originally the name of the Roman province that included Carthage and Numidia. It eventually became used for the whole continent in the same way that the Roman province of Asia eventually was. I don't think there's consensus about where the name came from, I've never heard the pagan god theory though.

Yes, and to push the etymology a bit further, it originally came by extension from a relatively minor group of people in the back-country of Carthage, called in Latin Afri. Brent D. Shaw has written a very good article on this in A Companion to Ethnicity in the Ancient Mediterranean, J. McInerney (ed.) 2014, Wiley-Blackwell.

I read some stuff that maybe the romans knew much more about Africa then we think today. Cause today we see many sources skeptical about campaigns and other things. It was also the point with germania until we found that battlefield in germany a few years ago, everybody agreed that the original sources which told us the romans did huge campaigns into germany even in the 2th century AD - it has to be bogus and many "fixed" the sources. Today after the suprise discouvery of the battlefield we know the original sources were true and we have to think all the stuff new again.

The same pattern is about Romans and how the interact in Africa.

I don't think (and have not heard) that any respected historian would have tried to deny the existence of Roman campaigns into Germany, while the literary sources are very frequently misunderstood or misrepresented. It's good to remember that neither the archaeological finds nor the literary sources are there to confirm or refute the other. The two tell completely different narratives, which can however be somewhat complementary to each other.

The same applies to Romans and Africa: there is no reason to exaggerate either Rome's ignorance or knowledge of Africa when we do know from several literary sources that there was at least two spurts of trans-Saharan exploration and prospecting - during Augustus and again under the Severans. Bu

Please anything but Andalusian, I hope byzantine myself.

I personally think Arabic portraits would be more apt - particularly if we could get a revamped or renewed Arabic portrait pack which updates the looks to the level of the more recent packs.

I also think a new Portrait Pack based on Levantine and Egyptian characters (maybe part of a global Arabic revamp, also covering Bedouins and Berbers in a separate way), with extra headgear and clothes to accurately portray Muslim, Christian (Assyrian and Coptic) and maybe even Jewish cultures, would be, in my opinion, perfect.

(Northern) Africa looks amazing! A long overdue overhaul of the region.

Speaking of long overdue changes, personally I hope that the rest of the HRE/Germany gets the same attention as Bavaria & Austria.

Back on the main topic again, I like the addition of goldmines and how the new trade routes are balanced.

Dear sweet heavenly jesus this is wonderful!

The only thing I can really say that makes me a bit sad is the lack of coastal provinces for west Africa next to Mali. Maybe we'll get lucky and that'll be added eventually.

I can say one thing though! I'M PLAYING MALI WHEN THIS COMES OUT!

Also, I take it the African Holy Sites are different now, so Reforming the faith should be much easier.

Once I get the prestige snowball rolling, there's no stopping me. Even without tribal armies, tribes shouldn't be able to take and hold large kingdoms at all. Also, the holdings make me cringe and don't suit the game well (there's also the 'magic appearing holdings' when you switch). But worst of all is the composition of armies - now your next viking raid will be unarmored peasants with javelins.

All in all, CKII's worst feature. I'd rather play Muslims.

What was the Empire of Mali then?

If I had to make a guess, in game terms, it was a high tribal organization tribe. The system worked very similarly to feudalism, but it wasn't full blown "western" feudalism, mostly because of the way the culture handled wars, and the fact that it really was a big confederation of tribes.
